When a mortar rocket exploded at the crowded market of Sarajevo the whole world was up in arms. The outcry was such, that it led to the theretofore considered "unlikely" NATO intervention. It was the first such action by NATO after the Cold war, and it was a veritable act of courage, given that Russia was squarely on the side of the Serbs. Yesterday, for the nth time, a market has been bombed in Baghdad with an almost identical amount of victims ... and the world is barely taking notice. Is the world changing, getting desensitized to human suffering? That the Serbs were ruthless there is no question. But are not the militia in Baghdad even worse? There should be a way to intervene in this case also! I realize that the circumstances aren't the same. The Serb tanks were in full view. They were bombed and they left. Here the murderers are invisible, unnamed. But still I don't get it! Bagdhad has the advantage of many troops available for search, right there. Why not cordon the city, and search every home in Baghdad? I have been advocating this for years. It's doable! If the troops and resources aren't enough, this is the moment for NATO to step in with courage, like in Sarajevo, and help cleanse Baghdad from terror once and for all!
