European Championship final: Germany-Spain I enjoyed watching the other games after I came back from NY. I saw Germany-Turkey and Russia-Spain. The Dutch lost against a better playing Russia with the Dutch trainer Guus Hiddink. Italy and Portugal suprised me in this championship, because they performed less good than I expected from them. The Italians were too defensive. I could not believe that Portugal lost from Switserland. I could not understand the Polish failure against Germany (2-1), Austria (1-1) and tiny Croatia (1-0). Was it their Dutch trainer Leo Beenhakker or were the players not that good? I am curious who will win this final this evening. Both Germany and Spain are very good and strong teams. Jeepers Pieter I was almost to miss your post!! Thank you so very well for the url. Yes, I was to watch of the final quarter whilst in our office meeting room on the large screen. It was wonderful of the Spanisch team player Fernander Torres with his pass reception to over come our goal defender Jens Lehmann with his bad judgment. It was so exciting though in the work of the Spansich team, for they were magnificent with team work and execution of team spirit! The Spanisch team was Superior. It was our defeat, but, not the disaster. My hat is off to them {Spanischen} for they fought good and they fought hard, we were just not up to their spirit......... Charles

Pieter, thanks for the update. I am quite happy that Spain won. I have nothing against Germany but thc country is in the finals every time and they do not play a boring and calculated football. I always support a team which is considered a looser rather than a favorite, hope that Charles does not mind my opinion

Yes, the Spanischen won for they bested us on the playing field, it was hard fought. The laurels are theirs to take. Charles

What was nice about this championship was the sportivity of the players of most of the national teams, and the soccer comeradship between the players of differant national teams, because the players of various teams play together or played together in let's say Barcelona, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Roma, Chelsea, Manchester United, Bayern München, Borussia Dortmund, FC Schalke 04. So the Spanish, German, Polish, Dutch, Italian and Portugese players found their team players on the other side in a team of the opponent. Many of the Dutch players in the EC play in foreign clubs like I mentioned, and the Polish goalkeepers Artur Boruc and Lukasz Fabianski or keepers for Celtic and Arsenal. Jacek Bak is a defender of Austria Wien (Vienna), Pawel Golanski is a defender of Steaua Bucharest, Mariusz Jop is a defender for FC Moscow, Marcin Wasilewski is a defender for the (Flemish-Belgian) RSC Anderlecht, and Michał Żewłakow a defender of Olympiakos. Midfielder Lukasz Piszczek playes for Hertha BSC Berlin, midfielder Dariusz Dudka plays for the French AJ Auxerre, midfielder Jacek Krzynówek plays for VfL Wolfsburg, and midfielder Mariusz Lewandowski playes for the White-Russian Shakhtar Donetsk. The striker Marek Saganowski plays for Southampton, striker Euzebiusz Smolarek for the Spanish Racing de Santander and striker Maciej Żurawski for the Greek Larissa FC.
Dutch players play for the Premier League clubs Manchester United, Chelsea, Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa, Wigan Athletic, Liverpool, Arsenal, the Scottish Celtic, the German Hamburg and FC Schalke 04 clubs, and the Spanish Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid. Hamburg has 3 Dutch players, the defender Joris Mathijsen and the midfielders Nigel de Jong and Rafael van der Vaart. One of the best defenders we ever had the Dutch-Maroccan Khalid Boulahrouz plays for Chelsea.
While Boulahrouz was in Switzerland preparing for the Euro 2008 quarter finals against Russia, his and his wife Sabia's prematurely born daughter Anissa died in the hospital of Lausanne. He opted to play against Russia a few days later, and the entire Dutch team wore black armbands.
