Interesting experience watching this funeral, hearing this sad music eight months before the breakout of the terrible war. The scene captures the spirit of that epoch and calls for reflection. I was instinctively looking for familiar faces of my ancestors, which I obviously couldn't recognize. My mother certainly was there and the grandfather, a colonel in the Legiony. All my relatives were there, physically or in spirit. It was the funeral of Poland, but those people didn't know it. There is a profound lesson in these ghostly images and music. I see a proud people apparently unaware that a grave was opening under their feet. I see the faces of leaders blinded by their own self-importance, unable to see ahead. They soon all be fleeing for their dear lives, to London and to Bucarest, leaving the people alone! But the people who could have saved Poland ... weren't there in this funeral! For them, there was no thought whatsoever ... and no weapons!
