Ever since the creation of the European Union, NATO has been a no man's child, the proverbial bastard. The key word is indecissiveness - a lack of identity! Someone in NATO must have known that the Russian convoy was on the way to South Ossetia, yet no one warned the Georgians to destroy the only mountain pass! Hundreds of lives were lost as a result, and billions in military equipment. One wonders who is in charge of monitoring the satellite photos in NATO and in Pentagon! What if atomic war-headed missiles were on the way? Would NATO and Pentagon see those?

Nathanael,
I am glad NATO was not involved with this Gergia-Russia Ossetia struggle. This would be a real mess.
Here in America people think that Georgia was too confident that somebody would help their forces therefore they moved first in Ossetia.

I agree that the president of Georgia committed a stupid act. This wasn't my point, though. I am convinced that NATO cannot stay on the sidelines, allowing allied countries to fall! NATO knew probably more than you or I about this event. NATO had the duty not only forewarn Saakashvili that Russians were comming, but also to stop him from making a stupid mistake. This is not a trivial matter for Poland, where someday something similar may happen! Will NATO be up to the task by then? This is why I consider my moral duty to write about these things, not wait for the disaster to happen! By the way, Jaga, would you also be glad that NATO didn't step in if Poland were attacked?

I should add the following: I agree with everyone that the war should be the very last resort. The war is unthinkable! However, a solution must be found to the problem ... not so much of Georgia, as to the problem of the fear that the Russia's neighbors ought not to have! An urgent solution is a must. People in satellite countries, children in particular, are entitled to live free from fear of Russia! This is the crux of the matter! This is what the world wants now! We must try to find a way to attain this without war! But we cannot remain silent!
