This is a discussion of John McCain with Laura Ingram. As you probably know Laura Ingram is a conservative commentator and she is worried that China is overtaking the US. Please, listen and read here: thinkprogress.org/2008/08/20/mccain-econ-strong/?o=1fragments: INGRAHAM: And now look: the dollar’s weak, we have serious competition from abroad, government is running a deficit. … What are the Republicans going to do if China ultimately overtakes us economically and does that matter? MCCAIN: I still believe the fundamentals of our economy are strong. We’ve got terribly big challenges now, whether it be housing or employment or so many of the other — health care. It’s very, very tough times. It’s very tough. But we’re still the most innovative, the most productive, the greatest exporter, the greatest importer.

If this is true that Sen. McCain said these things, this Senator is living in Alice-in-Wonderland! Such tidbits of misinformation may be good for the Beves and Butthead generation, but not for me. Here is the comparison between the present state of the 12 largest economies, in trillions (countries with the largest (GDP)):
1 United States $11,750,000,000,000 2 China $7,262,000,000,000 3 Japan $3,745,000,000,000 4 India $3,319,000,000,000 5 Germany $2,362,000,000,000 6 United Kingdom $1,782,000,000,000 7 France $1,737,000,000,000 8 Italy $1,609,000,000,000 9 Brazil $1,492,000,000,000 10 Russia $1,408,000,000,000 11 Canada $1,023,000,000,000 12 Mexico $1,006,000,000,000 I have heard the tape which you provided. It's a terrible disinformation! Either is Sen. Mc.Cain criminally ignorant, or he is out of his mind! Each year that passes, China is advancing by a trillion, and this means that in five years China will have surpassed the United States! Why is this happening: China is the largest exporter in the world, with colossal trade surpluses! And think, our Congress still gives China the preferred trade status as "an underdeveloped nation." If this is not Beves and Butthead mentality, what is? And this when our State Department has a global policy to let the American (veterans and non-veterans)who cannot afford private medical insurance abroad, to die by attrition without any help! Do people know how U.S. citizens are treated by our embassies and consulates abroad, under Ms. Condoleezza Rice? I bet they do not want to know! That's how profoundly immoral our society has become! We have lost all credibility and all conscience in the eyes of the world!

Nathanael,
interesting information. The US also owns to China lots of debt since China is the biggest exporter to the US. No any empire lasted forever. China is on the way to become one, for how long. Nobody knows.
There is also a chance there would be no any one empire which would rule the world since we are becoming so interconnected and dependent on each other.

It is interesting. Today I listened to FoxNews saying that China overtook the US in sport and they predict that this is not one time win. Somehow the commentary was that the Chinese supremacy is expected.... of course this is just a sport, but it was interesting to hear about this comparison to Chinese. Usually suprmacy comes not only in one field but in many.

It would so seem that of one record is beat, then that is the mark to play up to in the following events. Perhaps today it will be China, then tomorrow, it will be Brazil, it is competitive sports, not the end of the world. Or, perhaps I am singing in the wrong choir, with the wrong song book. Karl

"If they wanted to help the Communist Party issue propaganda to its own people, they succeeded. If it was to improve human rights, they failed miserably." This phrase [from today's press]speaks for itself. I believe that the Communist Party should not have been awarded the Olympics in the same way the Nazi Party shouldn't have been awarded the Olympics. We know what happen soon after the Olympics in Nazi Germany. There was a spectacular sense of pride and emboldment, and the World War II followed. We still have yet to see what will happen after the Olympics in China. My sense is that you never, ever, embolden an evil regime! The history will bear me right!

For this is not of politics/communism/long ago past Nazi Olympics, for this is of the here and now, today {or until this previous Sunday}. It is of the Olympic spirit of contest. For these young folk, have trained their bodies at cost of leisure and what ever they have sacrificed, just to be in the Olympics. Then they have torn their hearts/mind and skill to compete against others. It is not of a time of protest/human rights issue, it is a time of spirit that was embodied by the ancient Greeks to be carried to the present. www.athensinfoguide.com/olympic.htmAs a person, I am forward looking to the Winter Olympics. Jaga, Karl and Nathaniel, This discussion started on China's surge in the world's economy. The Olympic gold medal count is not the standard for measuring a countries economic supremacy. So who cares who got the most medals. I sure don't. What matters is the U.S. dreadful economic status, its dependence on petroleum for energy, the ongoing health care cost crisis and mostly the inertia of Americans and their leaders to change this. What a mess. If America does not get off its dupa to turn this around you better learn to speak Chinese.

yes and no. Maybe it was a bit joking comparison of the situation in sport and in politics. Still, I believe China has great prospects ahead.
Maybe all of us should learn Chinese soon!

I think that we should separate the Olympics from the economy discussion, period. Karl is trying to have it both ways. It won't work. The segment is on economy. For that purpose I have provided the statistics and a proof that China is overtaking the U.S. in my first comment. But my second post is about Olympics and history ... and it is only on that because Jaga has injected the "Olympics" in the discussion. Karl should read again what was said, before drawing conclusions! In my "Olympics" related conclusion, I stand for what I have said a hundred percent: those who forget history, are bound to repeat it! This is not about an innocent competition! This is a competition between an oppressive- atheist-Communist regime and the Free World! It is possible that Karl has been born away from Second World War and Communism. But he should listen to people who have much more experience. I have been there, and I am too experienced to regard lessons from history as "nonsense"!
