China must not let the Olympic spirit die! I do not believe in "leaving politics out of the Olympic games." This would be true and noble in an ideal world. I am afraid that then world needs to use this opportunity to vent its grievances, peacefully as the case may be. Remember 1936, how the U.S., sheepishly, rejected the boycott of Hitler? Having rejected a proposed boycott of the 1936 Olympics, the United States and other western democracies missed the opportunity to take a stand that might have given Hitler pause and bolstered international resistance to Nazi tyranny. Hitler was on his best behavior during the Olympics' two weeks. In his inaugural speech, he called "for peace among nations, and a spirit of mutual understanding." But this good behavior ended the day the Olympics came to an end! With the conclusion of the Games, with a new-gained international "recognition," Germany quantupled its efforts to prepare for war! I think that there is a lesson here. China needs to be put on notice that repression as source of national power won't be tolerated by the civilized world! The Olympic spirit must not end with the Olympics!

The Olympic spirit must not end with the Olympics! I must respectively dis-agree with your assessment of the Olympic games to be judged within the aspects of politics. China is a sovereign nation and a very important world trading partner. It would be as a viewpoint of my self, that all politics be laid to the side, this in respect for the Olympic spirit to prosper as a common theme. Charles

We will have to agree to disagree. Your China is not my China. My China has had a trade deficit with my country, which has empoverished the U.S. by several trillion dollars. Is this an important trading partner? It may be your partner, but certainly not mine. Secondly, my China has been repressing my religion, to the point that my cardinals and bishops continue to sit in jail. Your China is "sovereign" to do what she pleases with other people. My China violates the human rights of innocent people daily, maintaining millions of sweat shops, confiscating private property, sending to re-education camps old ladies, some 75 years old, to work in hard labor gulags! Your China is OK, ... full of an olympic spirit." Still, you have a right to root for your "wishful-thinking" China, while I have the right to despise the real China, the way my mind sees her!
