The news is news that a Bishop from Kerala, India, has gotten into trouble for adopting a 26-year old woman "for her great spirituality." I can see why Indian women, nuns especially can be very lovely. I studied at The Agelicum with some nuns from Kerala. Their smiles were never leaving them, were angelic, and were out of this world. Yet I always knew how to keep some distance, nonetheless. I can see why we need to love other people spiritually, even if the body also participates to some extent, but we must always remember that first and foremost our Lover and Spouse is God!
Being of spiritual nature, this story has to be probed and decided by the Vatican. I am not qualified, or at liberty, to venture a solution. But, as a theologian and someone who studied in Rome in company of several priests and nuns from Kerala, India, I can see why a Indian woman can charm! The smiles of some nuns in their twenties were out of this world! I remember getting into trouble for reminding one such nun, during a seminar she was presenting at the Angelicum, that "smile is not everything, in Christianity." I have noticed excessive infatuation of some U.S. and Italian theology professors of great stature, with "spiritual fraternalizing" like caressing the man's or womans hair, etc. I myself had been with some Indian nuns on friendly terms, but I always knew that my love for God comes first! I am not surprised that this Bishop has been suspended. I find an "adult adoption" bizarre to some extent. We can be great and close friends in spirit, but why adoption? This is what Vatican will have to explain.
