www.vor.ru/English/new/?view=tidbits&id=349VOICE OF RUSSIA Tid-Bits of the Week Wednesday, November 29, 2006 HIGH TECH IS NOT ALWAYS GOOD By Mike Sullivan Hi-tech may be the cause of serious stress and dealing with technical support personnel can only add to your frustration. A recent survey of gadget owners reveals that when people lose contact with the machines and each other they often end up with headaches, heartaches and insomnia. According to everyday practice and the results of a recent Harris Interactive and RightNow Technologies survey, many gadget owners suffer fits of rage, cry and become hysterical when they start having problems with, say, a computer. Failing to find a cure in the manuals, users bombard servicing companies with phone calls which, the reports' authors agree, may really drive anyone crazy. Almost 85 percent of the 2,225 Americans polled, admitted that their high-tech gadgets often make them feel extremely nervous and even aggressive. Some said this often gave them headaches, heartaches and sleeping problems. Nearly half of those surveyed said that what really burned them most, was the inability to get through to the technical support people and that the service personnel often failed to show up at the right time. PCs, digital camcorders, photo cameras and DVD players were named as the most problem products. The authors of the survey also threw in the Internet and mobile gadgets. The Apple iPod and Sony PlayStation were singled out as the most simple and easy to use, according to USA Today newsmagazine.

Jim I just bought the 2GB Nano. I was hesitating about buying one not sure if I would even be using it. My friend talked me into getting it saying how convenient it was since it it so small and light. I am not really a big music listener so liked my walkman since I had radio and cassette player. Once they dropped the price on the Nano I considered it even more. (also I just wanted one cause its the new toy to have) I am hoping to record some podcasts. (I like listening to Coast to Coast AM but require sleep ;D ) My memory stick is just 1GB also. I figured that is all I need. It is only for my occassional files I need to transport. Twice now I saved something from my PC at home and brought it to work and the file asked if I want to format the disc. ?? When I checked with IT they said it might have gotten corrupted and that the floppies damage easily and suggested the memory stick. So when Staples has an ad in the Sunday paper with a good price I went for it. ($19.98)

Rdy,
The nano is easy to use and you can put lessons on it as well. Its just memory so you can download text to it or songs etc. 1G memory stick is what I have also for transporting files etc. from a PC to a Man and Mac to Mac.
Floppies do go bad from time to time. You need to back them up.

Rdy, I have a ipod 40 gig (but no video) and an ipod shuffle (the little teeny tiny one) I love both of them. When we bought the shuffle - we also bought a thing that you plug your Ipod into and you can use it like a stereo - It is very small but the sound is terrific - better than the "normal" stereo we have. Plus it is portable and easy to take along with you from room to room and by the pool too!

I was at TJ Max today and they had the speakers for the IPOD and some other things. Arm band from Nike, the speakers weren't Belkin I don't think. Some covers. Charger for the car. So if you have one in your area worth checking out the accessories in the Men's dept. They have some neat things in there. Also I got lucky and found another OLC ornament. I found one last year, one the year before. I kept one , gave my mom the other and who will the lucky person be for #3.

Speaking of Modern Technology ;D Take a look at this! Everthing old is new again as my grandmother used to say... I just think it is major cool. The Antikythera Mechanism, sometimes called the world’s first computer, has now been examined with the latest in high-resolution imaging systems and three-dimensional X-ray tomography. A team of British, Greek and American researchers was able to decipher many inscriptions and reconstruct the gear functions, revealing, they said, “an unexpected degree of technical sophistication for the period.” tinyurl.com/y5amq8

Okay today I installed the IPOD. I had to do it twice. First time it came over in Japanese. Had to reset it and then it downloaded correctly. No manual came with this just a little flyer. Grrrr. So I had to go to Apple.com and download the manual which is a big pain in the dupa. (oh maybe this is where my memory stick comes in. Can save the file and print it on a super jet Xerox printer...ha!!!) With no experience at all with this new toy how am I supposed to know the basics like turn on/off. So far I have one CD on it. The icons and instructions do not match what I see on Itunes so this was just stroke of luck since I am at least familiar with downloading music from a CD

I was laughing {with you} on the lack of directions as of an owners manual. The manufactures have figured out a way of skimming more profits by cost savings. They have it on the E net now and the purchaser must access and print out at owners cost. Had the similar problem with the HP Camera, took almost an entire pack of print paper to do what should have came in the first place with the camera as an owners manual. On the Ipod, do you plug it into a charging unit, or replaceable batteries? Charles

Charles the batteries are charged by plugging into your PC...no batteries to buy. (although it may need to be replaced eventually like a cell phone ....at least I think I saw that somewhere in my reading. It's like a mini computer)

pieter How well do I agree with you on the hydrogen question, for every question of why, there is always the answer, why not... But, there once again, we face a basic formidable barrier, and that is the people question. For people do not like change,it upsets them. For change creates a situation of the unknown and this inturn is the prerequisites for the basis of fear, and that is the fear the unknown. If perchance, to view out side the box of conventional thinking. All we are actually seeking is a heat source to power our machines by converting heat to rotational mechanisms to do work. Currently, the most available cost effective heat powered machines, convert energy from the burning of fossil fuels. And as you have brought forward, hydrogen will do the same job by combusting in a closed chamber, the fuel of hydrogen. It is clean and viable. It is simply though, the currant process of converting hydrogen from water that consumes electricity. For world areas lacking in hydropower facilities, it is not cost effective, in the conventional means of thought. If we must combust a fuel for a heat source, out world is a play ground of fuels. Coal is very abundant, petroleum is still abundant as a source of hydrogen/alcohol/petro-Chemicals {used as a catalyst for production of heat with out combustion}. As yet, the efficiencies of the currant state of development in the accumulator {battery} is not very well developed for chemical storage of electricity or in the case of the currant state of development in the storage condenser technology. It is a wide open field of fuels waiting infront of us to use. What is lacking at present is: A demonstrable need. Which will require a presented plan of requirement. Guidelines of development, formulated plan of action, means of production, storage, distribution, and use. The last plan of action is: Do it. At present, development of currant otto cycle motors are here, for the use of multi fuel {either petrol or alcohol}, gas turbine power plants are here that will use most any form of hot gas for generating motion by passing the gas through the power turbine blades, rather it be steam {has not the requirement of water vapour} for any material that has been gasified will work, even that of hydrogen peroxide will work fine. We as people are blessed {or cursed} with two very visible forms of non-exhaustible heat sources, and that is {Sun Shine} and ground thermal heat {volcano and ground thermal heat}, it is all here. What is lacking though: is funding and imagination with the will to succeed. As a common person, I have not the ability to do this, if as a person I had this blessing, I would be dead at the hands of those willing to suppress this knowledge. So I am blessed with being ignorant and poor {and alive}. Charles
