Looking Forward
I am surprised by two things in this election, the wide majority that elected Obama; we have no more 50-50 splits in the choice this year, so this time th nation has clearly chosen. The other is running across a good number of people who voted for McCainwho come forward and say “he is the elected president; let us unite and make this work.”
This thread is an invitation to look forward and to tell us what you hope for in the next four years.
Obama being a Black Man (well, about 50%) revolutionizes American politics and, I am guessing, resets the clock for America giving us a leap forward in rehabilitating our image and effectiveness around the world. The last such opportunity was after 9-11 when the world stood behind us. We now have psychological ties to Africa and to Indonesia. With Barrack being a Christian and having attended schools in Moslem Indonesia, we should keep our eye opened for the opportunity to counterbalance radical Islam and promote toleration between Moslem and Christian in Moslem countries and at home.
A second opportunity is to improve and open up discussion of race relations within the USA. Hopefully inspired leaders with some of the wisdom of Solomon will come forward and lead us into these uncharted waters and we will emerge as a more United nation. I want Obama and his crew to concentrate on running this country while others address this intensive task. Further, there is an opportunity for Black children throughout the USA to be inspired by this well spoken Black man and to realize the advantages of speaking Standard English rather than the ghetto English of pimps and sports figures. Hopefully within 20 years we will have a vastly expanded crop of inspired Americans on the road to success in mainstream America. This hope is to have them surpass the folksy, fractured talk used by Palin as well as to leave the Ho’s (whores) and the Pimps behind with the hip-hop rappers. This is not to deny the evolution of ‘black’ music in the USA, but to hope that it will develop with better influences than drugs, sex and violence as primary themes. As we watch developments,w e should not forget that Rock n’ Roll was condemned from the pulpit in the 50’s, and the Polka was condemned as thoroughly imorral in the 1800’s.
