What is Maramures, a province in Romania, famous of? It is famous for its wooden architecture. Primarily the wooden churches.

It shows how the tree served as the inspiration Wooden Churches of Maramures I'll add an outlying bit of info here. Maramures is also known (to a few at least) for the protestant (Lutheran, I believe) wooden churches as well. I believe they follow the log construction practices, similar to the orthodox. This would be a natural use of known technology. In Slovakia there are a number of famous wooden protestant churches, but those I am familiar with are frame construction, not log. These were a result of the Catholic Hapsburgs temporary relaxation of their religious laws, the toleration decrees. There were specific limitations on where and how the churches could be built: out of town, no doorway facing the street, no permanant (brick) material. Thus the wooden churches. Of course, both Slovakia and Matamures were part of Hungary, and thus of Austria-Hungary when it was created. Kai
