I just finished attending the 2011 Solutions to Coastal Disasters Conference and came away with a very positive feeling. The people were experts in many fields and aspects of coastal development from around the world (including people / papers from Poland, Czech Republic and Germany), though primarily from the Pacific Rim.
The topics were how to minimize or best control, as far as the current science will bring us, the death and destruction of coastal disasters of all types, from sea rise to tsunamis to building and improving locally sustainable fishing ports in third world countries.
I was impressed with the very positive approach everyone took and the positive atmosphere of being surrounded by solution oriented people. It was a refreshing break from this world of common news of political stalemate, stone walling behind opinions, and refusal to work together. It makes me wish I were again in my 20's and starting my career in such an exciting world.
Now to button up and head off to the airport!
PS. And climate change was naturally a large theme woven into the fabric of the conference. There was no mention of Global Warming or Political Science, but a recognition of current changes that are forcing us to plan for rising sea levels and changing weather and sea patterns. I learned it is far more complex that I was previously aware, but we have good and talented people working around the world to keep our societies functioning.

I had a nice flight on Condor to Germany and happily fly with ear plugs, which made the young family with three noisy kids tolerable. I wonder how the other passengers managed it! Otherwise it would have been tempting to see how one or two of them could fly from the airplane over Greenland.... If hearing is supposed to get worse with age, especially on the high frequencies, how is it that kid's voices are so shrill and penetrating?
My rental car was waiting on the outskirts of Frankfurt and there was no shuttle waiting as implied on the web page... so my first adventure was by S bahn, U bahn (both rail) and by bus to find this obscure address.... it seems 312 on the street had no relation to 399, and the bus took so many twists and turns I don't know for sure where the rental place is located. While getting the car out was easy, finding it for the return will take some map or GPS study!
The good news is that I booked a small car, Corsa or equal, and received the smallest Mercedes, A Class. Now to be sure I don't scratch it in the week I have it.
On to the day .... had a good night\s sleep and should have a good day.

Kai,
thanks for the update. I thought about you travelling to Germany and I was waiting for news. I cannot imagine why there would be no any transportation to the car rental and wy it is located so far from the airport. My husband is also in travel. He is on the way to Texas to pick up our daughter.
Glad to hear that the conference about Coastial Disasters was so positive.
