Oh ... I thought we had a different, longer thread. But here is some Slovak news with the castle as lead story. It is worth watching simply to see how local news is presented in Europe. www.joj.sk/relacia-noviny/noviny-archiv/2012-03-10-noviny-tv-joj.htmlOne of Slovakia's best preserved gothic castles has burned down in a dramatic blaze. Krasna Horka, a 14th century castle in the nation's east, was reportedly set alight by a deliberately-lit grass fire that spread to the national monument, whose name means "beautiful little hill, " Wall Street Journal reports. The fire erupted on Saturday afternoon local time as the country conducted its national elections. There were no visitors inside the castle at the time. Zoltan Arvay from the local emergency operations centre said that the roof caught fire then fell in, setting alight the furniture and exhibits. District fire brigade operations officer Stanislav Peti said the fire was caused by a spark from the nearby grass fire. "We are 100 percent sure that the fire was started by the grass burning," he said. "Originally, [residents] called us to protect the nearby settlement." Outgoing Prime Minister Iveta Radicova said: "For many this sad event at Krasna Horka has cast a huge shadow over today's elections. "

Kai,
good pictures but it is sad that such a beautiful castle burned out. I think that burning grass was a problem, blaming gipsies may not be a reasonable idea at all. There were many gipsies living in Slovakia when I was there, but why would they burn the castle?

Kai, good pictures but it is sad that such a beautiful castle burned out. I think that burning grass was a problem, blaming gipsies may not be a reasonable idea at all. There were many gipsies living in Slovakia when I was there, but why would they burn the castle? Jaga, I meant Gypsies since I heard they live next door, down the hill from the castle. Slovaks also burn brush and grass illegally. In this case the closest suspects were Gypsies. The latest is that it was some boys smoking. I doubt that anyone burned the castle purposely. I suspect it was a spark from the grass fire that flew up to the roof. I am surprised that they didn't use fire treated wood for the roofing! I thought that was standard given the know danger of shake roofs. PS A shake is a wooden shingle that is made from split wood. Shakes have traditionally been used for roofing and siding applications around the world.
