Pieter What a wonderful subject! I am not sure of the identities of those fellows, one in center front appears to be Jan Moots, not sure. These are fighters in the Freedom Wars in South Africa against the British. The weapons in the photo, appear to be One: Mauser whilst the other a: Lee-Metford. Both excellent weapons of the time. I believe the Mauser rifles were the weapons of choice for the Boers. This was a particularly nasty war, for it was then the British introduced the concept of: Concentration Camps to break the will of the Boer farmers turned freedom fighters. In these camps, were captured Boer women and Children concentrated into fortified enclosures. In this manner, disease were common and with such closed enclosures, sanitation was problematical. From the Freedom wars {2}, two fellows were to go on in life with great success and a tribute to the future of South Africa. One being: Louis Botha {first PM of South Africa} whilst the other: Paul Kruger or {Ooma Paul} becoming State President of South African Republic {Transvaal}. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Boer_Waren.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Bothaen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Krugerangloboerwarmuseum.com/Boer20b_techofwar.htmlThe following url is a park name in honour of Paul Kruger www.outlook.co.za/index.htmlFollowing url is of Jan Smoots en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Smuts_in_the_Boer_WarKarl
