Holly,
It is more dificult for me to describe the Maroccans and other Northern-Africans in my country and other European
countries, because this group is very pluriform or hetrogenic in it's kind. Like the Turks you have various Maroccan groups, from traditional Sunni Muslim Berbers and Arabs from the older
traditional first generation of guestworkers (from the seventees and eightees), the second generation which lived in a culture clash between their strict parents and the secular and christian Dutch society around them. A lot of Maroccan youth lost track and were (are) involved with small crime like roberies, theft, drugsdealing and prostitution (pims, loverboys). Others were normal law obeying citizens, went to high schools, technical
higher education or universities. Both Turks and Maroccans (the largest mirgant groups) are mainly very poor low class people from backward regions from their countries. The poor and very harsh rough moutains of East-Turkey's Anatolia and the also rough and undomesticated Rif mountain area in Marocco.
These are people with nearly tribal cultures with Vendetta, honour killings, the absolute domination of the men, a shame and honour culture (daughters were kept home and watched over closely, because the preservation of their virginity is of the most importance, to have good wedding candidates for the
husbants the parents choose). The Berbers are slightly differant from the Arabs, and you have some tensions between Arabs and Berbers. But that is not dominant, most important is the shared Sunni Muslim identity, the dedication to Mecca, the sacretness of the Qur’an and the faith which is the dominant factor. Like in Turkey you have secular Conservatives, liberals, democrats, socialists, Marxists and Nationalists in Marocco and in the Netherlands next to Islamists and Monarchists (Old fashionate conservatives). Maroccans have more problems to fit in the Dutch society and are less succesful as the Turks, who have more
Middle class. The Maroccans are mainly working class people or unemployed. Maroccans aren't liked by the Dutch, have a negative immage and are more associated with Arab terrorism
and crime than the Turks or other Muslim minorities like the Iranians, the Kurds, Indonesians and Muslim Surinamese. In contrast with that you have quite a few succesful Maroccans like the State-secretary Ahmed Aboutaleb, the Amsterdam politician Ahmed Marcouch, the Dutch Maroccan writers Hafid Bouazza, Fouad Laroui and Abdelkader Benali and the Dutch-Maroccan actress Maryam Hassouni and the comedian Najib Amhali, who has a large mainly Dutch audience. It's complicated Holly, because you have both Maroccan terrorists like Mohammed Bouyeri and Samir Azzouz and prosecutors of terrorists and criminals like Ahmed Aboutaleb and Ahmed Marcouch.
