www.entertainmentwise.com/news?id=17452Eurovision winners Lordi aren’t Satanists according to Finland’s ambassador to the UK. The mask-clad rockers stormed the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday and were immediately criticised by some organisations in the host nation of Greece. Jaakko Laajava told the BBC: "This is entertainment. Let's not take this too seriously. "They have produced an album called The Devil Is A Loser and maybe that tells a little bit about this," Laajava was reacting to Archbishop Christodoulos of the Greek Orthodox Church’s comments that their victory "shows that people are seeking something to prop themselves on and fill their empty souls." The band themselves have previously admitted that they’re not inclined towards the dark side, saying: "We are not Satanists. We are not devil-worshippers. This is entertainment."

Did they win last year, too? They look strangely familiar.

I can only say how pleased that I was that I missed the Eurovision contest this year! Usually I watch it - I am a masochist - but it must have been really bad this year. Leslie

This year, as a couple of years ago, Russia came in second place. But it is disappointing, because they sing only in English.
When Alla Pugachova sang at Eurovision in Ireland a decade ago, she sang in Russian. The response from the audience was amazing, and most critics expected her to easily win. However, she finished in 13th place. The reasons the judges gave -
- She sang in Russian, which no one in Western Europe knows - She is "too old" (she was in her 40s then, looked great, and besides, Tina Turner and Barbra Streisand are older, but no one calls THEM "over the hill") - She is not only "too old", but wore a super-mini skirt - In the 1990s, not every Western European nation was ready to consider Russia an "equal partner" in culture yet - She is "too old" (that was really their major point - they consider Eurovision for the younger generation)

That is an absolutely disgusting picture. Is this the image of popular culture that Europe wants to present to the world?

Eric For a few years after Eurovision came into being, the winners and the other placements depended on the quality of the songs (and also how they were presented) - I used to watch every occasion then. Now, unfortunately the placements seem to me (and many other people) are almost 100% political linked with geographical proximitites. How anyone couls adjudge that horrific, lacking in music performance as representative of Europe's best!!!!! Leslie

Too bad I'm too young to remember the days when the songs and performances were what determined winners.
