Ukraine, a young country without much experienceChallenges facing the new parliament in Kyiv, the Kremlin’s position on pro-European aspirations of Ukraine and Poland’s role in championing the Ukrainian cause… Slawek Szefs of Polish Radio’s English Section talks to Professor Richard Pipes – a Polish-American academic, longtime lecturer at Harvard University specializing in Russian affairs and former National Security Council member under President Ronald Reagan.en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Pipespl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Pipes

Pieter, thanks for posting the interview with Richard Pipes. The journalist has no idea about how different cultures operate. He does not understand that Russians may like their own leaders instead of being anti-Russians and love America.... Pipes is an interesting guy. Still, I wish that the journalist stop using "Pan Professor" like an aristrocratic title almost all the time.....

This is an excellent article for the BBC by Anatol Lieven, Professor, Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service in Qatar. It shows well and realistically how difficult or impossible the situation in Ukraine is for Ukraine itself, the EU and the USA. Russia's position is far stronger due to the deeply interconnected Russian and Ukrainian economies, the fact that millions of Ukrainian's work in Russia and have a financial importance to Ukraine, and the fact that there is an anti-European (EU) opposition in Europe. And the latter is especially directed against East-European immigration to Western-Europe (opposition against free labour movement within the EU). m.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30278606

In the efforts to use what ever tools available to discredit The Russians has been used includant baiting the Russian military into stepping over the line into a warlike stance. This includant of NATO and The EU. It has been fortunate for us all, cooler heads have prevailed with just a symbolic show of military showmanship for the benefit of the home land common good on the Russian side. It is for certain, Mr. Putin has not been very diplomatic in his past actions, but then the steps taken in most instances has been necessary for both economic and political survival withen the sphere of our international community. Withen this, has been the long standing for many years, a symbiosis partnership between Ukraine and Russia in both the economic relationships and interrelation ships in mutual agreements. These are as a marrage between to parties, what goes on behind bedroom doors, stays there. What has been of recent, a spanner tossed into the getriebe has been a series of leadership individuals of extreme corruption in the most reckless manner. Much of the above has been resolved through events of recent with now the picking up of pieces to put back together in their most respective and progressive manner. At present with some accordance of situational control in the manner of cooler heads at the helm, the work of rebuilding may then commence. It is as proposed, to keep Ukraine neutral between the West and East is an excellent proposal. Karl

Ukraine as a neutral Swiss or Sweden like country would be good for Ukraine and it's neigbours. Fact stays thar a large section of the Ukrainian population is ethnic Ukrainian nationalistic or Ukrainian Patriotic and partly (not all of them) Pro-Western and Pro-EU. Another part of the Ukrainian population is ethnic Russian or Pro-Russian ethnic Ukrainian (possibly Ukrainians with one Russian parent, Russian family or a Russian Sovjet upbringing). Mind you that I, and other Western-Europeans and American look at the troubles or conflict over there with colored Western eyes. We look at it from our North-American democratic system or from the European continental position. Russia is independent and to a certain extend disconnected to continental Europe (Western-Europe, the Scandinavian North, Central- and Eastern Europe West from Russia and Southern-Europe). Russia isn't part of the EU, nor from NATO, the Visgrad Group or the Weimar Triangle. In contrast with Russia for instance Poland has managed to become an integral part of Europe and the West. Seen the present Global geopolitical situation, challanges and threats to the West in general and humanity in particular it would be wise not to alianate the Russians from ourselves completely. The West as a collective should start the largest diplomatic effort in mankind to solve the Ukrainian, Syrian, Israeli-Palestinian, Iraqi and Iranian (Nuclear issue) in once. To all of the conflicts Russia is directly or indirectly connected.
We shouldn't be appeasing, soft, forgiving or to leniant to Russia, but nor should we point a finger at Russia as the bad guy, naughty kid in class or the enemy. We (the West) should be pragmatic, rational, logical, clear, homest and direct in our approach towards both the Russians and Ukrainians. Can Ukraine do the necassery reforms, can it combat corruption and nepotism, can the Ukrainian leadership make Ukraine a reliable partner for both the West and Russia. Fact will continue to be that Ukraine will stay economic and energy dependent of Russia. Vice versa it is the truth that Russia is Financially snd economically dependent on continental Europe. Europe is the largest client of Russian gas.
