Jim, Actually the other two babies died, they did not fly off. I am not sure exactly what happened - they were banded a couple of days previously and were healthy. There is some suspicion they ate poisoned food, or maybe were attacked by a nest invader - it is not clear to me. Bescheid/Charles helped me figure out what little I learned, no real statement was posted, but there are pictures in the archives. nature is tough.

Nancy I shed a little tear when I read your latest posting on the storks in Nest 1 with the information via Charles. I had watched them since they were eggs and were growing up. The last I saw of them they looked as if they were ready to leave the nest - then the next time I looked they were gone. I assumed they had flown, but what a terrible thing to happen to them. The remaining one is growing fast now and looks ready to leave the nest - I do so hope it survives as it now seems just like one of my own. I assume Charles discovered this from his knowledge of German? Leslie

Nancy,
Bad news. I too thought they just grew up and flew off. I see the other two nests are still active. Suvival of the fitest for Mother Nature.

This nest is on a street corner in a German town. It has had its share of drama, but at the moment there are two chicks there. One was fostered in a couple of days ago. BUT - if you can access the live video site (below) it has sound! The babies make all kinds of funny noises - too cute (and very interesting!) www.storchennest.de/en/index_live-video.html

Nancy,
I wrote the German site about the storks and there answer follows:
this was a real bad bad disaster at 2 june, two young storks died! We don't know the reasons but there are some symptoms which might be caused by poisoned food -- maybe from a golf course not far away. But not proofed by the scientific point of view. They often use chemicals there to keep their greens in a "good shape" -- but we are not shure about that. Might be caused by the bad weather too, but in the other nests all chicks seem to be OK.
The third chick had serious symptoms too, but recovered at evening of the 2 june: it started to preen after many hours of inactivity. At this evening we we observed two feedings again! So there is hope for this last young stork -- may his will to survive be rewarded - it would be a miracle.

Jim,
Thanks for the info! I'm glad the third stork recovered.
PS. I don't think storks are "off topic" so I am going to move this thread.
