It is terrible how people treat homeless people. It is the same in the Netherlands. People ignore them or are irritated that they are there. The problem is that you have homeless people who lost their relationship, job and house and try to survive on the streets, in parks and places where they can stay warm and maybe find some food. I talked with some of them. They are leading tough lives. It is hard to survive out there. And there are tons of reasons people are out there. Veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Syndromes. Children (teenagers) who escaped from asocial households and abusive parents. People with mental problems who can't get or keep a job. The extra mental problem for many of them is the idea of having failed, of being a loser, and feeling the disgust, hatred and antipathy of other people. The latter you see happen to this poor veteran in New York.
I remember seeing these homeless people in New York in Manhattan on Broadway in June 2008.
