I enjoyed another great meal at "For You European Cafe" in Plano Texas this week, www.foryoucafe.com/ intersection of Plano Parkway and Alma. I've been going there when in Dallas for years. The wonderful lady who runs the cafe is from Warszawa, and while she has many European dishes on her menu, she of course specializes in Polish meals. I hadn't been to Texas on business in quite awhile, and she remembered instantly that I hadn't been there in two years. Very flattering. Instead of getting the Polish plate (which came about recently because I believe every time there I'd tell her "I only want Polish food" and she'd throw a plate together that wasn't on the menu), I got only Bigos and Kopytka. My cousin got the Polish Plate, which no lie, will feed 3 or 4 adults. Bardzo smaczny!!!! They have a small shop there where you can buy all manners of Polish foodstuffs, and Leslie will be happy to hear they have much smalec just waiting his order. They have both fresh meats and cheeses in their display case, as well as canned, jarred, and other perishables. I bought Barszcz Czerwony instant soup..LOL I'm sure it will be bad, being instant, but I just had to try it. I remember Mikey B's pic from Christmas with the bowl of beet soup, and I just had to buy it. This should be interesting!!!

Piwo let me know if it is worth it to buy as I have a Polish store in the neighborhood and have seen the same. You can be my guinea pig.

Going to try it at lunch tomorrow! My wife made some Bigos Warszawa this evening, and I'll have that and the barszcz for lunch. Wish me luck! LOL

Did she (the shopkeeper) have dried Polish mushrooms that didn't cost an arm and a leg? GM

Did she (the shopkeeper) have dried Polish mushrooms that didn't cost an arm and a leg? GM Hmmm... there certainly were jars and cans of Polish mushrooms, but I don't recall seeing dried mushrooms. There were quite a few items in the refrigerated section: I could always send and email to her and inquire. What kind of mushrooms are they. I really have no knowledge of mushrooms. And, my wife called me at work today and said she saw something on the street where I park my car. It was my packet of Barszcz, which must of fallen out of my jacket when I got it So, instant barszcz testing tomorrow! When I told my mom about them, she laughed and asked me if I knew why I had never tried it: because her mom make her eat it as a kid and she HATED it. So, she didn't make her kids eat it. Her's of course were made with fresh beets from the garden, sometimes pickled so they could have them year round. Busia was a prolific gardener and "pickler"... ;D

I would never eat borscht as a kid either. My Mom made it, I refused to even try it. Yuck and double yuck.
Then, in Krakow in 2004, I had some at a restaurant (they insisted) ... wow....love at first taste...
takes a long time to grow young.

I did barszcz based on the instant soup just a couple of days ago, I am still eating it since nobody in my home eats it with me. Ela also refuses It is good. I added some stems from the regular red beets when I was preparing the base for the soup with the meat bone.

Czesc Piwo As you will have read I have just returned from an exhausting visit to Poland, but one of the many wonderful highlights was that I had borszcz twice a day - lunch and dinner. I love it.
I once had a recipe for it made the real Polish way, but unfortunately have lost it. Can you, or your wife or any of our good friends on the forum recommend one? I made some last night from a recipe I made up in my head - it was ok but not like the real thing.
What was the packet soup like? The wholesalers in this country must think that good beetroot soup is not for British palates as I can't get any here. Would you be so kind, when you can, to buy for me, say three packets and send them to me? I will of course reimburse all your costs. I will email you with my home address.
By the way, tell the shop not to be so kind as to save me any smalec - NONE!
Pozdrawiam
Leslie

Czessc Leslie, I am embarrassed to say, that we cannot locate my packet of Barszcz! I had it out, missed making it once or twice, and now we don't know where it is. I've mostly forgotten about it, but will look again when I return home from my business trip. I really wanted to try it, as it is "very Polish" and I've never had it. My mom disliked it so never made it for us. I'll ask my cousin to pick me up a couple packets and send them to me, and I'll certainly send them your way. Maybe find more then one brand, choices would be nice! I read your thread on your trip and your nice award, along with pictures. I really am so jealous: I loved being in Poland, and it's change of "pace" from everyday life. Something very honest about being on a Polish farm with people who have so little, but share so much. do zobaczenia, John

John Whatever, whenever you can I shall be most delighted. I've made it twice at home now since my return, two different ways - OK but not as good as those I have had in Poland. Most packet soups by reputable manufacturers in the UK are good: I keep pestering the retailers who do not stock anything like this to let their marketing and purchasing department know that they are letting down at least one customer!! Same applies to Zubrowka and Wiborowa - only one retailer in the whole Sheffield area stocks these and I can't always get to that one. Do zobaczenia Leslie

Well, good news and bad news on the barszcz situation. Good news, I made the winiary brand, AND IT WAS REALLY REALLY GOOD!! I don't know what it's supposed to taste like, but I sure liked what I tried. Wonderful!! Bad news, I'm so sorry sir Leslie, I've had two days in a row with meetings through lunch hour and have been unable to get the package to the post office. Tomorrow is open, so they SHOULD get out on Wednesday noon. Please forgive piwo

Your are too kind sir.
I'm interested in hearing what someone who's actually tasted the real stuff says. The Winiary was good to me, but maybe a let down to someone more familiar. It was a little salty, which I didn't mind, but my wife said she thought it should be sweet and not salty?? I don't know. I'll try the other brand for dinner tonight and give a report on that as well!
I also bought a Jar of cabbage soup (imported by cracovia brand from Polsce) and we had that Sunday. Pour contents into pot, add one jar of water, heat and serve. It was VERY good as well and so far my spouse has like it all . I wish it was not so far a drive, but one I will make and really stock up.
I'll convert that "niemka" wife of mine yet! ;D
