Hi, I've been unsuccessful trying to locate my great grandfathers birth-city. At this point I'm assuming that it was misspelled on the passengers log. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...

Wincenty Putejko - laborer, Silkiniki ? Not sure, it would help if you scan the whole page. The last name suggests Eastern Poland or Belarus.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Here is the entire scan of the page the record is found on. Silkiniki is the one I'm trying to locate.

the person before was from Lithuanua or zmudz. His last name Zyliskute and the town of origin "zwigiliszki?) so at least we could look for a proper region.
Wincenty Putajko or Putejko - was from Silkiniki or Sielkiniki (sounds rather Belarussian or Ukranian). May be spelled also Sielknieniki or Sielkiniki. Is his final destination "Lost Williston"?

East Williston Long Island, NY to live with his brother and then to Duluth, Minnesota in 1908 until his death in 1926. I've also seen the birth city spelled Jelginiki.

Poland was partitioned into three parts each belonging to a different country.
He was a miner, coal mining was in Western Poland, mainly Silesia, that belonged to Prussia, salt miners were in Austrian part of Poland. In Russia I can think only about petroleum, but in these times petroleum production was not that spread out yet. The name of the town "Zgilnicki"?? sound Polish but misspelled. Give me some time..

I'm not familiar with earlier handwriting styles. I believe "Zgilnicki" is correct on the document. The first letter in the name is the only one I'm not 100% sure about.

Bryant, thank you for your help. I also saw Zgilnicki and I was surprised, since this sound like a last name rather than the name of the town.

He also had two brothers that came over a few years before he did. I may try going through the micro-film at the library and pulling their "Declaration of Intention" to see if the birth city is written differently or more clearly.
