Poland summons Israeli ambassador to clarify Netanyahu comments on Poles in Holocaust
Friday, 15 February 2019 19:51 GMT
(Adds new Israeli statement)
WARSAW, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Poland summoned Israel's ambassador on Friday and threatened to scupper a summit in Jerusalem after reported comments in which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to accuse the Polish nation of complicity in the Nazi Holocaust.
Netanyahu's office said in a statement that the prime minister, who was in Warsaw for a U.S.-sponsored Middle East conference, had been misquoted by The Jerusalem Post, which issued a corrected story.
In a later statement, Netanyahu's office said that in his remarks on the question of Polish collaboration with Nazi occupiers, he had not cast any blanket blame.
Poland, where sensitivities over the issue of its actions during the Holocaust are high, called in Israeli envoy Anna Azari.
The matter of Poland's conduct during the Holocaust - in which many of the six million Jewish dead were killed in Nazi camps on Polish soil - was at the center of an Israeli-Polish diplomatic dispute last year.
After an outcry in Israel and the United States, Poland's conservative Law and Justice government backed out of legislation mandating jail terms for anyone suggesting the country had collaborated with the Nazis.
Sensitivities were tested again late on Thursday after Netanyahu answered a question about that law posed by one of the Israeli reporters who had travelled with him to Poland.
Israel's Haaretz newspaper quoted Netanyahu as saying: "The Poles collaborated with the Nazis, and I don't know anyone who was ever sued for such a statement."
Yaakov Katz, the Jerusalem Post's editor, told Reuters the account in his newspaper had used the term "Polish nation", although not in a direct quote from Netanyahu, and the story was swiftly amended to reflect what he really said.
But Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Szymon Szynkowski vel Sek said Warsaw wanted the matter "to be clarified unequivocally". Hours later, Netanyahu's office issued a second statement.
"In a briefing, PM Netanyahu spoke of Poles and not the Polish people or the country of Poland," the statement said.
Many Poles still refuse to accept research showing thousands participated in the Holocaust in addition to the thousands who risked their lives to help the Jews.
Commenting on Netanyahu's remarks, Polish President Andrzej Duda raised a question mark over a two-day summit in Jerusalem next week of the four central European nations - Poland, Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Duda said that if Netanyahu had said what was originally reported, "Israel would not be a good place to meet in spite of the previous arrangements". Duda offered his own presidential residence as an alternative venue.
Netanyahu has sought to use the so-called Visegrad group as a counterweight to western European Union criticism of Israel's policies towards the Palestinians. J.J.
Appears a certain amount of over reaction in the manner of PIS in consideration of the source as found to be false and misquoted news. That war on European soil was loused for us all, and no hands were completely clean. The population in that time in Poland was state wide, so it is inevitable a few were not so clean in the question of Jewish turn over to the Nazi killing programme at that time.

Dear friends, I am critical towards both governments and nations. I agree with Karl. I will mention the Blue Police ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_Police ), the Jedwabne pogrom (Polish: Pogrom w Jedwabnem, pronounced) and some Polish collaborators with the Nazi's who gained financially from that cooperation. Irritating fact is that the whole Polish nation is blamed or smeared as collaborators for the few Nazi collaborators the nation had. If you look for instance at Hungary, Romania, Croatia, the Netherlands, Austria, France, the Baltic states, Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, and other countries the level of cooperation with the Nazi's was more than 10 times higher. Cooperation with the Nazi occupiers was punishable by death, due to an order of the Underground state, the Polish government in London and Armia Krajowa. Netanjahu uses an old anti-Polonist trick used by both American and Israeli jews to blame Poles for anti-semitism and being complicit with the Nazi Holocaust, while the real executers of the Holocaust in Poland were Germans from Germany, Austrians, Volksdeutsche in Poland (the German minority in Poland) withj their paramilitary organization (militia) Volksdeutscher Selbstschutz, Ukrainian SS and Kapo's, the Jewish Police and Kapo's, Russian SS collaborators and yes a tiny minority of Polish anti-semites, Blue Police officers and the locals who organised pogrom in Jedwabne. Cheers, Pieter

History is used for political gains, pushing pressure and nationalist goals by both sides.

I will rather agree with John than with Karl and Pieter. Netanyahu is a true b's player. He came tompolamd and he should play is well. Poles did not have even a puppet government. Pieter mentioned blue police, but in the same way you could blame the Jewish elders for making the lists ifbjews sent to the death camps. In Siberia there was not blue police. Netanyahu treats Palestinians worse than southbafroca was treating blacks and he goes away with murder

For at this time, the rift between Israeli and Palestinians are the primary cause of unrest in that area besides that of Syria. But strange as it may appear, The Saudi have joined forces with Israel with Iran as their common foe. As a bit of nonsense, the Palestinian name is not a race, these people are Arabs, Palestine is only a place name. Syrians are a race in as well as Iranians are a race of their own in as well as Egyptians. To then complicate matters, now the Americans are angry with the many European states with business ties with Iran, with this, also with Germany for stopping all military equipment sales to the Saudi Government. Gollies, what troubles this Gulf area has caused in International circles... Karl

Karl, thank you! Yes, conflict between the Palestine and Israel, the bully, is still the same as before and a source of concern and lots of suffering; The Saudi and Israel alliance is strictly political, since Iran is considered a main rival of Saudi and Israel is using it for its advantage.
