In Poland it was a very good time. We have first democratic elections after the round table debate. The elections were not completely free yet, communists had its share of seats in the parliament - but people could also chose their representatives.
"OUR PRIME-MINISTER YOUR PRESIDENT" - this was the Michnik's slogan since Jaruzelski preserved its presidency by one vote
Some people call the round table debate - a betrayal

But the June 4th 1989 was a time of the Tienamen square massacre.
So, there was a good and bad
This was also a day when in 1992 - Macierewicz, a minister in Olszewski's government, announced the list of alleged communistic spies among them Walesa.... and then his government was dissolved by Walesa

Jaga, I remember the 4th June in 1989 very well - it was a great time, so full of hope. For me it was not a betrayal it was grabbing a chance of a lifetime to change the country. The other date with Macierewicz as a star - I don't even remember, I don't care about his "black briefcase", agents and stuff.
I felt extremely happy that spring/summer and not for personal reasons but for Poland.

Zooba,
I am so glad that you posted here. Frankly, I felt bad that nobody else seem to notice this date. I also agree with you, for me Olszewski and MAcierewicz was one of these nationalistic without any common sense governments. They did not even plan any economical reforms, they just saw the world as black and white (like current American administration).
It was very good that some communists and some oppositionists were willing to sit together at the round table and compromize!

Jaga, I find the apparent willingness of the opposition and the communists to sit together interesting. Do you know which side it was that took the first step? Who said let's sit down together and work this out rather than letting it become a fight for power between us - or something to that effect. Why are those in power not willing to do this now? What I mean by that is that the current admin seems intent on witch hunts and not being cooperative with "those across the aisle."
