African Americans still suffer from systemic discrimination, and the country’s “war on drugs” is chiefly to blame. Police disproportionately search young black men, and are much more likely to imprison them for nonviolent drug offenses. On release, they often can’t find work because of stringent background checks. This process deprives black Americans of their rights as effectively as the segregation laws the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s fought to overturn. Moyers & Company46,9K abonneesAfter civil rights lawyer Michelle Alexander published her book The New Jim Crow in 2010 on our dehumanizing system of incarceration, she ignited a national conversation about justice in America and sparked a movement. In her book, Alexander explores how the war on drugs, "get-tough" sentencing policies and racism has created a caste system similar to that of our segregationist past.
Since then, Alexander has traveled the country to meet advocates and everyday Americans working to end mass incarceration in America — home to 25 percent of the world's prisoners, despite representing only five percent of the world's population.
She tells Bill that she has seen a grassroots movement brewing in communities across the country, "There are enormous victories that are being achieved precisely because the people whom we have written off and viewed as disposable are reclaiming their voice, standing up, speaking out, organizing even as they struggle to survive." Moyers & Company is a commentary and interview television show hosted by Bill Moyers, and broadcast via syndication on public television stations in the United States. The weekly show covers current affairs affecting everyday Americans, and features extended conversations with guests on issues of the day. It premiered on January 13, 2012, and concluded on January 2, 2015.
The show is produced by Public Affairs Television, taped in the studios of New York City PBS affiliate station WNET, and distributed by American Public Television (APT) with major funding from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
