In 1043, she was married to Iziaslav of Kiev in a double ceremony that also married her brother to Iziaslav's sister. She had one son, Yaropolk Iziaslavich, by her husband. Gertrude was the owner of a medieval illuminated manuscript, known as the Egbert Psalter or Trier Psalter, that had been created in the late 10th century for archbishop Egbert of Trier. She included her prayer book as part of the codex. In the prayer book she prays six times for Yaropolk, "unicus filius meus" (my only son). That is what Wiki says. Nowadays many medievalist in Poland, first T. Michałowska are interested seriously in Gertruda. Prof. Miachałowska even claims her to be first Polis authoress. |

I forgot about Nawojka, you are right! I never heard about Gertrude, very interesting post! I guess, she might be more known in Ukraine than in Poland.
But Gerdtruda's mother - Rycheza - is part of Mieszko's Kings' listing (poczet Krolow Polskich)

I have never pretended to be expert in Ukrainian literature, but I guess that Ruthenians were unable to read her prayerbook because of ignorance of Latin. Leaving Ruś since first edition of T. Michalowska's "Medieval Polish literature", Gertrude is- or should be- known to all polish philology student. Michalowska in huge chapter writes about Gertrude and her handbook is canonized by every University. Few years ago a translation of prayerbook by Brygid Kurbis was published. One more person from eve of Poland division into principalities: Agnieszka, the German wife of Krzyousty's son Wladyslaw Wygnaniec. As it is say in first Polish Latin written in hexameters poem "Carmen Mauri", through intrigues of Agnieszka, war between Wladyslaw and his brothers started. Today we have only prosaic, shortened version of "Carmen Mauri". text when about Agnieszka, is full of misogynistic sentences. My favorite is "spółkowac z wężem i smokiem lepsze niż ze złą niewiastą"- "copulating with serpent and smoke is better than copulating with bad woman" |

Kamil, thanks so much for your contribution. You have a lot of knowledge. I wish I could consult with you some of the history resources. My father is a retired history professor but I am a physicist. So, I probably do not know that much about Polish ancient history and literature as you. By the way, do you have the website? Would you like to contribute with the article, something about Polish history to our site? referring to the women issues.
