On August 18, 1944, the Royal Air Force launched one of their 174 air raids on Bremen, which was supposed to last 23 minutes. After that, the west of Bremen was almost completely in ruins, more than 1000 city dwellers died in the attack. The aircraft crew was back at their home airport after about 5 hours, with an average of one in 20 aircraft not returning. The psychological pressure on the crews was great, it was not uncommon for a pilot to land with a plane full of dead. A Commander of the Pathfinder Force, who directed the following bombers to the target, wrote in his diary: "The machine gun openings, the glass domes and the wide open bomb doors made us targets for the deadly projectiles."
In the last few days before taking the city, the RAF bombed almost continuously. The Senate of Bremen tried to surrender the city without a fight, but the commander Becker tried to maintain the defense of the city. On April 20, she was finally surrounded by British and Scottish infantry divisions. Residents were given a 24 hour ultimatum to surrender. On April 21, the British military warned Becker again in vain on the phone of the coming attacks. After another 6 days of air raids and heavy artillery fire by British troops, the Becker crew finally surrendered on April 27th. One month later, on May 20, 1945, the Americans officially took over government.
April. Einen Monat später, am 20. Mai 1945, übernehmen die Amerikaner offiziell die Regierungsgewalt.
