Rare 'bomb cyclone' warning as 200 million Americans hit by severe winter weatherTens of millions of Americans endured bone-chilling temperatures, blizzard conditions, power outages and cancelled travel plans ahead of the Christmas holiday weekend, as a rare bomb cyclone extreme winter weather phenomenon was forecast amid unprecedented a winter storm that forecasters said was nearly unprecedented in its scope.
More than 200 million people -- around 60% of the population -- were under an advisory or warning on Friday, the National Weather Service said. The weather service's map “depicts one of the greatest extents of winter weather warnings and advisories ever,” forecasters said.
Power outages have left about 1.4 million homes and businesses in the dark, according to the website PowerOutage, which tracks utility reports. Utilities in Nashville, Memphis and throughout the Tennessee Valley said they were implementing rolling blackouts Friday to conserve power as the region battles an extreme cold front.
And more than 4,600 flights within, into or out of the US were canceled Friday, according to the tracking site FlightAware, causing more mayhem as travelers try to make it home for the holidays.
“We’ve just got to stay positive. Anger is not going to help us at all,” said Wendell Davis, who plays basketball with a team in France and was waiting at O’Hare in Chicago on Friday after a series of flight cancellations. www.euronews.com/2022/12/23/us-battles-winter-weather-blast

Well, here in New Hampshire it is about 4o out and it is clear now. Lost power for most of Friday. Came back on around 11:15 PM
Friday was a wild weather day. Many trees were laid to rest and many branches have been trimmed nicely by nature. More than 2"
of rain fell Friday. Then the temp dropped down to single digits in a few hours. Had trouble opening my main door as it was frozen shut.
Yesterday we celebrated Wigilia with 12 people sitting around the table. Much food, refreshments and love shared by all.
God Bless and a very Merry Christmas!!!

Hello Pieter, and Merry Christmas! None of the storms in the USA have affected me too much. We are 300km south of Anchorage and the Mat-Su Valley where they are inundated in snow and slick roads and school closures to the point where they are wondering how the students will make up the study time. Happily distance learning is no longer a stranger to society, so there is that option to minimize the time lost. We were delayed 4 days in traveling from Anchorage to Homer after a heavy and quick deposit of snow. We allowed the highway crews time to clear the roads through the mountains, around 120 km (70 miles) or 1/3 the total distance, and the roads were so good I was shocked we made it in very good time, despite my trying to drive cautiously! We were down in Ohio and Pennsylvania in November and traveled through New York state to enter Canada at Buffalo NY on our way to and from Niagara Falls. If you ever get a chance to visit the Falls, be sure to go to the Canadian side, the view is far superior to that from the US side of the border. A small storm chased us quickly back to Ohio, but we had a very pleasant trip along Highway 5 on the lake shore. It s far, far superior to taking the freeway/tollroad! Route 5 is a broad two lane road with very little traffic. At least in or experience. I am familiar with the storms along Lake Erie. We were out on the Fairport Harbor breakwater in a storm, and the artist Jeremy Mudd caught it in a commercial photo he offers: I have also driven through a white out snow storm passing through Buffalo decades ago, but even that was nothing compared to the storm this was. The Lake Effect storms can be amazing. I was born and raised on the shores of Lake Erie and always have felt an affinity to the sea, for these Great Lakes are truly inland seas in all physical manifestations. All well here! We had a very cold front heating Idaho on Wednesday before Christmas. It was -28 F on our termometr outside. Then the front moved eastward and brought cold temperature to Texas. Of course not as cold as in Idaho. Now we are in Colorado and it is sunny and almost too warm. There is a lot of snow but it is melting

Thank you guys (John, Kaima and Jaga) for the updates. Nice story Ron. Jaga, I am glad that the weather has become less extreme and that you experienced some winter sun ☀️ in Colorado. In the Netherlands it is a rather grey and wet cold winter so far.
