Petition asks High Court to declare Netanyahu unfit for office

The Movement for Quality Government in Israel files an appeal to the High Court of Justice asking that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu be declared unfit for office.

The group argues Netanyahu is in violation of a conflict of interest arrangement that bars him from involvement in matters that could impact his ongoing trial on graft charges, including legislation his coalition is advancing that would drastically curb the High Court’s ability to strike down laws and give politicians full control over judicial picks.

“Netanyahu has proved that he is incapable of separating between his legal matters and the management of the country, and is trying to destroy democracy,” the organization charges in a statement.

These demonstrations give me flashbacks to the large demonstrations of the KOD (Komitet Obrony Demokracji), the Committee for the Defence of Democracy, in 2015 and 2016.

JERUSALEM, Israel – Nearly 80,000 demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv this weekend to protest the Netanyahu government's plan to overhaul the country's judicial system. Demonstrators claim the proposed changes to the judicial and legal systems are a major threat.

Protest organizer Shikma Bressler explained, "A majority (in government) is one thing. I accept that. But the changes that are being proposed are going to the core of the way this country is managed and organized. And this we cannot allow."

Asaf Steinberg, a protester from Herzliya, said, "I think that the Israeli government should understand that he doesn't have a mandate to destroy Israeli democracy. That the fact that they're trying to destroy the checks and balances of the Israeli democracy – this will not work. And we will fight until the very last minute to save the Israeli democracy."
