Fears of a major Russian airstrike are rising rapidly as Russia gather warplanes on the border with Ukraine. Western allies therefore want to set up air defense systems at the border as soon as possible. The Financial Times writes about this.
Until now, Russia spared his large air force, but the NATO allies would have intelligence that this will now come to an end. The collection of fighter jets and combat helicopters at the border indicates that a new phase of the war is entering.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is also said to have spoken internally on Tuesday about the Russian threat from the air force. "He was very clear that we have very little time to help the Ukrainians prepare for an offensive and that they have some specific needs," said a senior U.S. government official.
"Eighty percent of the Russian air force is still operational," a top NATO diplomat told The Financial Times. "So we expect them to prepare for an air campaign and to aspire to take out Ukrainian anti-aircraft defenses with attacks."
