I am fascinated by the person of Etty Hillesum and her deeper inner feelings, her spirituality, her strength, her humanity and her writings, I have her written diary in Dutch book form. Esther (Etty) Hillesum (15 January 1914 – 30 November 1943) was the Dutch author of confessional letters and diaries which describe both her religious awakening and the persecutions of Jewish people in Amsterdam during the German occupation. In 1943, she was deported and murdered in Auschwitz concentration camp.
Hillesum’s approach to spirituality was not about striving for ecstasy. Rather, she longed to meet the depth of her own interior and life itself. Her spirituality was not confined to her intellectual understanding of a greater power and the depth of her direct insights is reflected in her diaries. In the concentration camp of Westerbork, she had unusual experiences of spiritual awakenings and insight: "Those two months behind barbed wire have been the two richest and most intense months of my life, in which my highest values were so deeply confirmed."
These excerpts of her writings have been primarily sourced from the text: An Interrupted Life: The Diaries of Etty Hillesum 1941–1943There are two books on my bedside table in Arnhem in The Netherlands, the latest Dutch Bible translation and the diary of Etty Hillesum. The latest Dutch bible translation of 2021 which lies next to 'An Interrupted Life: The Diaries of Etty Hillesum 1941–1943' on my bedside table

Etty HillesumEster „Etty” Hillesum (ur. 15 stycznia 1914 w Middelburgu, zm. 30 listopada 1943 w Auschwitz) – młoda Żydówka z Holandii, znana ze swojego dziennika pisanego podczas II wojny światowej.
W lipcu 1942, kiedy Etty Hillesum czekała na wezwanie do tzw. obozu przejściowego Kamp Westerbork, skąd odchodziły transporty Żydów holenderskich do Auschwitz. W czerwcu 1943, do Westerborka przybyli także jej rodzice i brat Mischa. 7 września 1943 została dobrowolnie deportowana do Auschwitz wraz z rodzicami i bratem. Uczyniła to w geście solidarności z innymi Żydami.
