GerrymanderingIn representative democracies, gerrymandering is the political manipulation of electoral district boundaries with the intent to create undue advantage for a party, group, or socioeconomic class within the constituency. The manipulation may involve "cracking" (diluting the voting power of the opposing party's supporters across many districts) or "packing" (concentrating the opposing party's voting power in one district to reduce their voting power in other districts). Gerrymandering can also be used to protect incumbents. Wayne Dawkins describes it as politicians picking their voters instead of voters picking their politicians.
The term gerrymandering is a portmanteau of a salamander and Elbridge Gerry, Vice President of the United States at the time of his death, who, as governor of Massachusetts in 1812, signed a bill that created a partisan district in the Boston area that was compared to the shape of a mythological salamander. The term has negative connotations, and gerrymandering is almost always considered a corruption of the democratic process. The resulting district is known as a gerrymander. The word is also a verb for the process.

Arnold Schwarzenegger was not the only Republican governor of Calfornia whom had be an actor in his previous life. Ronald Reagan was the 33rd Governor of California from January 2, 1967 until January 6, 1975. The 34th & 39th Governor of California was the Democrat Edmund Gerald Brown Jr. (born April 7, 1938). Arnold Schwarzenegger was the 38th Governor of California from November 17, 2003 until January 3, 2011.
Schwarzenegger has been a registered Republican for many years. When he was an actor, his political views were always well known as they contrasted with those of many other prominent Hollywood stars, who are generally considered to be a left-wing and Democratic-leaning community. At the 2004 Republican National Convention, Schwarzenegger gave a speech and explained that he was a Republican because he believed the Democrats of the 1960s sounded too much like Austrian socialists. The Social Democratic Party of Austria (German: Sozialdemokratische Partei Österreichs [zoˈtsi̯aːldemoˌkraːtɪʃə parˌtaɪ ˈøːstəraɪçs], SPÖ) is the second largest political party of Austria with 40 of the 40 of the 138 seats in the Austrian lower house, the National Council (German: Nationalrat). The largest Ausrtrian party is the conservative to Liberal conservative, Christian Democratic Österreichische Volkspartei (ÖVP), the Austrian People's Party, with 71 seats of the 138 seats in the Austrian lower house (Nationalrat). The Austrian Social Democracy was always a strong political power in Austria, before and after the Nazi regime. The Austrian Social Democracy was even famous for it's own pre-war ideology, Austromarxism.
Since June 2023, the SPÖ (Social Democratic Party of Austria) has been led by Andreas Babler. It is currently the second largest of five parties in the National Council, with 40 of the 183 seats, and won 21.2% of votes cast in the 2019 legislative election. It holds seats in the legislatures of all nine states; of these, it is the largest party in three (Burgenland, Carinthia, and Vienna.) The SPÖ is supportive of Austria's membership in the European Union, and it is a member of the Progressive Alliance and Party of European Socialists. It sits with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament; of Austria's 19 MEPs, five are members of the SPÖ. The party has close ties to the Austrian Trade Union Federation (ÖGB) and the Austrian Chamber of Labour (AK).
After the lost state elections in Lower Austria and Carinthia at the beginning of 2023, there was a power struggle between the moderate Social Democratic party wing around party leader Pamela Rendie-Wagner and the right-wing, FPÖ-friendly party wing around Burgenland governor Hans Peter Doskozil. The Social Democratic wing has support from socialists and communists. The right wing has support from the middle wing of the party. Disputes and disagreements have existed for years. In March 2023, the situation came to a head after the SPÖ Burgenland stopped paying money to the federal party. On 15 March 2023 a heated party executive meeting led to the call for a new party leadership election. The candidacy for the new leadership was heated and a surprise candidacy from Andreas Babler, mayor of Traiskirchen, which has led to some other candidates to withdraw their candidacy for the 2023 Social Democratic Party of Austria leadership election.Marek Edelman makes two errors. First he speaks about 1936 where that must have been 1934. And secondly the Austro Fascist government fought against the Austrian Social Democratic workers, but weren't Pro-German, and actually anti-Nazi (next to being anti-Socialist) and supported by Fascist Italy, which was at that time stil less influenced by German/Austrian Nazism. The Austrofascists fought with both the Austromarxists of the SPÖ and with the Nazi's. The Austrofascist leader Engelbert Dollfuss (4 October 1892 – 25 July 1934) was killed by Austrian Nazi's after the Austrian Civil War. In February 1934 Austrian security forces provoked arrests of Social Democrats and searches for weapons of the Social Democrats' already outlawed Republikanischer Schutzbund. After the Dollfuss dictatorship took steps against known Social Democrats, the Social Democrats called for nationwide resistance against the government. A civil war began, which lasted sixteen days, from 12 until 27 February 1934. Fierce fighting took place primarily in the east of Austria, especially in the streets of some outer Vienna districts, where large fortress-like municipal workers' buildings were situated, and in the northern, industrial areas of the province of Styria, where Nazi agents had great interest in a bloodbath between security forces and workers' militias. The resistance was suppressed by police and military power. The Social Democrats were outlawed by the Federal government on 12 February 1934, and their leaders were imprisoned or fled abroad. Dollfuss was assassinated on 25 July 1934 by ten Austrian Nazis (Otto Planetta and Franz Holzweber, who were subsequently convicted and hanged on 31 July 1934, and Franz Leeb, Josef Hackel, Ludwig Meitzen, and Erich Wohlrab, who were subsequently convicted and hanged on 13 August, plus Paul Hudl, and three others) of Regiment 89 who entered the Chancellery building and shot him in an attempted coup d'état. In his dying moments he asked for Viaticum, the Eucharist administered to a person who is dying, but his assassins refused to give it to him. AustromarxismAustromarxism (also stylised as Austro-Marxism) was a Marxist theoretical current led by Victor Adler, Otto Bauer, Karl Renner, Max Adler and Rudolf Hilferding, members of the Social Democratic Workers' Party of Austria in Austria-Hungary and the First Austrian Republic, and later supported by Austrian-born revolutionary and assassin of the Imperial Minister-President Count von Stürgkh, Friedrich Adler. It is known for its theory of nationality and nationalism, and its attempt to conciliate it with socialism in the imperial context. More generally, the Austromarxists strove to achieve a synthesis between social democracy and revolutionary socialism. Uniquely, Austromarxists posited that class consciousness in the working class could be achieved more organically through the maintenance of national autonomy, in contrast to the internationalist perspective and the notion of the party vanguard popular in orthodox Marxist circles elsewhere in Europe. www.britannica.com/topic/Social-Democratic-Party-of-Austria-political-party-Austria-1889I think Arnold Schwarzenegger remark about the Democrats of the 1960s which sounded too much like Austrian socialists, comes down too; "Austrian and European Social Democrats are Etatist, Big government, Social Wellfare State, Democratic Socialist, working class and lower Middle Class oriented people, despite influences of European and Global Capitalism, the Market Economy, multi-party coalitions -the long experience of Austrian Social Democratic Labour Party people with classical Laissez Faire Liberals -whom are Laissez Faire, Pro Free market people-, conservative liberals, staunch Austrian conservatives, Christian Democrats and Austrian Rightwing Populists (Far right Nationalists) of the Freedom Party of Austria (Freiheitliche Partei Österreichs, FPÖ; with leaders like the notorious Jörg Haider (26 January 1950 – 11 October 2008) and the equal notorious Heinz-Christian Strache (born 12 June 1969).
But I understand Schwarzenegger's criticism of Austrian socialism from the perspective from an Austrian-American. I think most Americans are allergic to European Etatist Social Democracy and Democratic Socialism in general and Socialism in particular. It doesn't matter if you are Republican, Independent or Democrat, Socialism is bad.
I have often wondered why the Americans didn't invented or experienced with an American, North American version of Socialism? Since every continent and country in the world seems to have had experience with some kind of Socialism in the versions of Social Democracy, Socialism, Communism, Leftwing Populism (Venezuela under Hugo Chávez) or Leftwing Military dictatorships (Myanmar [Burma] or the Scandinavian Swedish Social Democratic model. (Not only Sweden by the way, you have the Scandinavian Social Capitalist model based on Scandinavian Social Democratic economics and ideology in Denmark, Norway, party Finland -not a Scandinavian country or only partly- and Iceland. Finns or Finnish people are a Baltic Finnic ethnic group native to Finland, so they are not Scandinavians and neither is their language. Finnish (endonym: suomi [ˈsuo̯mi] (listen) or suomen kieli [ˈsuo̯meŋ ˈkie̯li]) is a Uralic language of the Finnic branch, spoken by the majority of the population in Finland and by ethnic Finns outside of Finland. Until so far this post. The question about 'American Socialism' or 'Why does American socialism doesn't exist' is a subject for another thread and question.

It is my own personal opinion that Mr. Schwarzenegger is a very remarkable man, a humanistic person of value to the human race. His messages seem always to hit on the truth of which ever subject he may choose as demonstrated in your presentation of this remarkable man.

Karl,
I simply completely aggree with you Karl. I admire Arnold Schwarzenegger as a person, actor, human being and businessman, filmmaker, politician, and retired professional bodybuilder. His history is both tragic (difficult youth), inspiring and interesting. The combination of factors bodybuilder, actor, businessman, filmmaker, politician and familyman and father.
Cheers, Pieter
