Folks,
This is the news (TV, website -online- and YouTube) item I made about the failed attempt by Pegida leader Edwin Wagensveld to set fire to a Koran again on Saturday, March 23, 2024, and the commotion after that in the Arnhem city society and city council after that. The muslim migrant Denk (Think) party asked for a debate in the city council, and that debate showed the pollarization in the Arnhem society, between political parties that support Edwin Wagensveld/PEGIDA Netherlands (Quran burning) and opponents of the attempt to burn the Quran.
PieterWritten by Pieter Pluijgers January 31, 2024 1:44 PMPVV and Muslim community Arnhem are diametrically opposed to each otherARNHEM - The Arnhem municipal council is against the burning of religious books, but does not want to change local regulations for this. Mayor Ahmed Marcouch wants to discuss in The Hague whether he can have the burning of religious books nationally banned by law.Last Wednesday, amid great public interest from the Arnhem Muslim community, an interpellation debate requested by the Denk party was followed about Pegida's prevented attempt to set fire to a Koran on Saturday, January 13.Municipal council under police protectionThe meeting took place under police escort. A majority of the Arnhem council is against the plan by Pegida leader Edwin Wagensveld to set fire to a Koran again on Saturday, March 23, 2024.
There is a lot of resistance to this intention from the Arnhem Muslim community, the DENK faction and other political groups and Mayor Marcouch. The mayor finds this reprehensible and horrible and would prefer never to see it in his city again. Opposed to this are the PVV and Forum factions, which believe that the right to free demonstration should not be interfered with.
PVV faction leader Coen Verheij believes that people should be able to carry out their demonstration within the right to demonstrate. Verheij thinks it is a bad thing that the demonstration could not take place due to violent counter-demonstrators.
The mayor has failed to maintain public order, and that is one of his most important tasks, according to Verheij. Verheij; "There will be another demonstration on May 23, and I hope he has learned the lessons from this and ensures that there is sufficient enforcement so that the demonstration can take place peacefully." Verheij continues: "It is very important to protect the right to demonstrate. That is the basis of a free society. In a free society you simply run the risk of being hurt. That is no reason to restrict that freedom, because then tyranny wins.”Muslim community sees Pegida leader as a troublemakerSpokesperson for the Muslim community in Arnhem, Mustafa Akpinar says: "We in Arnhem live in a beautiful atmosphere together, everything is going well, then someone comes from outside, who then disrupts our coexistence, harmony, and we then have to leave." see what the options are to prevent disturbances. Yes, we would like to prevent it, nationally, so I also hope that it is a signal for The Hague to do something about this."P.S.- The leader of PEGIDA Netherlands, Edwin Wagensveld, lives in Germany and comes to the Netherlans for his demonstrations against the presence of Islam, Muslims and the Quran and Mosques in the Netherlands. That is what the Spokesperson for the Muslim community in Arnhem, Mustafa Akpinar, meant with; "...someone comes from outside, who then disrupts our coexistence, harmony..."
In 2015, a Dutch branch of PEGIDA also started to emerge; Pegida Netherlands was launched on October 11, 2015 with an founding meeting in Utrecht. Pegida leader Lutz Bachmann, Pegida co-founder and organizational team member Siegfried Däbritz and Tommy Robinson, who launched Pegida in the UK and previously founded and led the English Defense League, were in attendance. That year, PEGIDA demonstrations were held on October 11 and November 8 in Utrecht and on November 29 and December 19 in Rotterdam. In 2016 there were demonstrations in Apeldoorn (January 17) and Amsterdam (February 6).Lutz Bachmann (born 26 January 1973) is the founder of the Pegida movement, a far-right German political organisation linked to the anti-Muslim counter-jihad ideology. The chairman of PEGIDA Netherlands is the Dutchman Edwin Wagensveld, who lives in Germany, who previously spoke at PEGIDA Germany events and was referred to in German media as 'Ed aus Holland', and who also presents himself as 'Edwin Utrecht'. Wagensveld was arrested on February 20, 2016, during a demonstration in Ede (Gelderland, the Netherlands), when he refused to take off a hat that resembled a pig's head. He was released without criminal charges because the public prosecutor ruled that no criminal offense had been committed. He was arrested on February 27, 2016, during a demonstration in Amsterdam, for unfurling a banner (shown here on the right) on which, next to the Pegida logo, a symbol can be seen that includes a swastika being thrown into a trash basket. On this day many Pegida members wore pig head hats like the one Wagensveld had worn in Ede. In 2019, Edwin Wagensveld misspoke after recording a Powned television program and stated that his arms trade flourishes during riots. Polarization and pitting people against each other is therefore a revenue model for him.
On March 18, 2016, Pegida members protested against the trial of Geert Wilders for his 'Less Moroccans' statement at Schiphol. The movement believes that freedom of expression is at stake. Five non-Pegida members and a Pegida supporter were arrested after pepper spray and knives were found in three cars in the area. The five non-Pegida members work with the Dutch Self Defense Army and are pro-Wilders. The Dutch Self Defense Army says the knives are a pocket knife and potato peeler.
