Palestinian security officers killed a Palestinian Islamic Jihad gunman in the West Bank on Thursday, a rare intra-Palestinian clash whose circumstances were disputed and which the terrorist faction described as an Israeli-style "assassination."

Palestinian Authority security services spokesperson Talak Dweikat said a force sent to patrol Tulkarm overnight came under fire and shot back, hitting the gunman. He died from his wounds in hospital.

Videos circulated online, and which Reuters was not immediately able to confirm, showed a car being hit by gunfire.

A local armed group, the Tulkarm and Nour Shams Camp Brigades, claimed the dead man, Ahmed Abu al-Foul, as its member with affiliation to the terrorist group Palestinian Islamic Jihad.

Al-Foul was "treacherously ... targeted in his car" without provocation, the brigades said in a statement. "This crime is just like any assassination by Israeli special forces."

Israel and PA have fragile security agreement

President Mahmoud Abbas' PA wields limited self-rule in the West Bank and sometimes coordinates security with Israel.

Parts of the territory have drifted into chaos and poverty, with the PA and Israel trading blame, especially since ties have been further strained by Israel's offensive in Gaza.

The terrorist group Hamas denounced "the attacks by the PA’s security forces on our people and our resistance fighters."

Palestinian security forces and gunmen have exchanged gunfire several times in the last year, but deaths are rare.

Hamas said in a brief statement that PA security forces attacked a rally called for by Hamas to condemn killings of Palestinians in the West Bank. It said many were detained.
Spokesman for the Palestinian security forces, Adnan Al-Dumeiri, said in a statement on social media that "They didn't participate in the areas of friction points (with Israel) as it was called for by the national parties. They want demonstrations against the Palestinian security and the leadership at the centres of the cities and not against the occupation."

Palestinian security forces have staged a large-scale joint training drill in the West Bank city of Bethlehem.

The exercise included members of the National Guard, police, intelligence services and civil defence.


STORY-LINE:

Palestinian soldiers in uniforms brandish their weapons.

But his is all for practice - they are taking part in a training exercise.

They are making sure they can secure convoys for high-profile officials in the city of Bethlehem.

In an operations room, officials monitor the drill - videos of protests play, an example of the conditions security forces could face.

Today's task has been designed to be as realistic as possible.

"The scenario is a visit by a president of a country and at the same time and according to security information there will be a protest at Nativity Street. Necessary requirements were put in place to secure this visiting guest and secure the route of the convoy and the places of visit in the right way," says Colonel Nadel Omar, Commander of the Bethlehem area.

Roads are partially closed in the city for the training.

A convoy of security forces, visitors, and emergency responders drive from the Bethlehem checkpoint to different religious sites in the city.

The Palestinian security forces are run by the Fatah movement and under the overall control of the Palestinian Authority.

Fatah has dominated Palestinian politics since its founding five decades ago.

But its leader Mahmoud Abbas has seen his popularity plummet due to years of failed peace efforts with Israel, a stagnant West Bank economy and his inability to reconcile with the rival Hamas movement, which seized control of the Gaza Strip from his forces nearly a decade ago.

West Bank - Fighting Between Hamas and Fatah



STORYLINE:

Palestinian security forces allied with Fatah arrested three dozen Hamas members in the West Bank on 14th June 2015.

The move came as Hamas were close to a military takeover of the Gaza Strip.

Fatah leaders said a decision was made by security commanders to crack down on Hamas in the West Bank, to prevent it from taking any positions in that territory, a Fatah stronghold.

Arrests of Hamas activists were reported in the West Bank towns of Jenin, Nablus, Jericho, Ramallah and Bethlehem.

In Nablus, masked security agents and Fatah gunmen rode together in cars, searching for Hamas members, and broke into several homes of Hamas activists.

In one area, a brief firefight erupted, with Fatah and Hamas gunmen exchanging fire in the centre of the West Bank city.

On Saturday16th June Fatah gunmen took over the Hamas-controlled city council in Nablus and other Hamas-run institutions in the West Bank.

Gunmen arrived at the council building shooting in the air, walked in and then climbed to the roof where they hung flags of Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, the military wing of Fatah, from the roof.

In Ramallah, at the parliament building, Fatah supporters chanted, "Hamas Out," climbed on the roof of the building and fired in the air.

They placed Fatah and Palestinian flags on the building.

Gunmen entered the office of Deputy Speaker Hassan Kreisheh and tried to seize him, but Fatah employees stopped them.

It is strange that the Palestinian police has Hebrew (Israeli) texts on their vests and not texts in Palestinian Arabic? You see that the Palestinians of Jenin are not hostile towards them, while they would attack Israeli police, Border Police or the Israeli army if they are present there.
