University of Amsterdam suspends education for two days: safety cannot be guaranteed

The University of Amsterdam (UvA) will not be teaching tomorrow and Wednesday. All university buildings remain closed, following today's disturbances during pro-Palestinian protests.
The university's management said in a statement that it "cannot take responsibility for the safety of anyone on campus."
Today a work stoppage took place in the UvA building on Roeterseiland. When this so-called "Walk-out" ended, the atmosphere changed. Some of the demonstrators stayed behind and according to the university, new people joined the group, including people dressed in black and masked.
According to the board, they barricaded all entrances and exits, creating an unsafe situation. They also deliberately caused destruction everywhere. In the afternoon the police intervened, putting an end to the protest.
The board of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) writes in a statement that it is shocked by "the way in which a peaceful protest has been hijacked by violent elements who abuse their own 'right to demonstrate' and deny the fundamental rights of others, including the media."
According to the university, it is unacceptable that students and employees had to leave the building because they were threatened or attacked. "No one is so right that this behavior is permitted," the board said.
Last week, the UvA was also closed for several days after pro-Palestinian protests got out of hand. Today the UvA was open again for the first time. Medical and dental students will be able to receive education in the coming days, because this will take place outside the university buildings.
