That what the building science available at that time and date was what the architects had to work with in the manner of materials and knowledge in as much as the science of the arch that was of compression strength of which is still in use at present times.
One such invention was the use of the flying buttresses that formed the backbone of such buildings as they progressed to high heights not otherwise believed possible in their time.
It is of present times to enjoy the beauty of these building in our advanced use of modern materials at present.
