I can imagine how scary this must have been but lucky enough there were no serious injuries. I remember arriving at my hotel once and there was a bomb scare so we were not allowed to register and guests were not allowed to leave their rooms. My ex worked at the MC till he passed away and when I saw it on the news I was worried for my friends there. Lucky for them it was in the am and they do not start till evening. The hotel will be closed for the whole rest of the week they were told and will get full pay for time off. Has anyone ever been affected by a fire.

We had an electrical fire that we caught before it went past the flash stage. The fire dept. had to stand on the stove, cut a hole in my kitchen ceiling to reach the smoldering beam, insulation and wires. They put the beam out with a large pot of rinse water that was in the kitchen. It was dinner time when this happened. We kept on smelling something burning. We felt the house walls for excessive warmth. Husband and son crawled up into the attic space and discovered the smoke-it was rolling/boiling. The fire dept describes the smoke rolling and boiling before it becomes hot enough to burst into flames. Our smoke detectors did not go off, because the smoke was in the attic not on the living level of the house.
Because we called the fire dept when we did, we minimize the damage that was done. We had to have part of the house re-wired, new insulation in the attic. Thru the insurance's claim, we rec'd new kitchen cabinets and a new stove because of the smoke damage. Every bit of food had to be thrown away-even things that were sealed. We had to have the house fumigated for the lingering smoke odors. We basically tore out walls in the kitchen and rebuilt from scratch.
The emotional side of this is frightening. To think of what could have happened. We had 3 inside cats at the time.I was afraid that they would run and hide because of the commotion. My fear was that the cats would be dead. Fortunately, I was able to put my cats in two cat carriers before the fire dept go there...then in a state of controlled panic, I made sure that I had my purse with the checkbook and other essential info in it. Our son took an antique painting off the wall and set it outside in the yard.
To this day, when there is a smoky smell somewhere, inside or outside the house, I have a slight amount of panic that runs thru me. You never forget what burning insulation smells like.

Joyce I know what a burning pillow smells like. I was in bed reading and had one of those intensity lights on my bookshelf over my shoulder. I kept smelling something burning and couldn't figure out where the heck it was coming from. I kept looking all around trying to figure this out and then I noticed my pillow case had a burn spot. Upon checking further I pulled the case of the pillow and the pillow which was one of those sponge types inside was melting away. I grabbed the pillow and tossed it outside. With in a short time the whole aprartment smelled so bad...not smoke more like toxic fumes. Thank God it was summer and could open the windows to ventilate. We had to sleep in another room for about a week before that smell finally went away. To this day I am very careful with lightbulbs and no more pillows without feathers for me. I heard not too long ago that they banned those type of lights from dorms as they have caused many a fire. A few weeks ago a family of 4 died in a fire due to clothes thrown over their surge protector onthe floor. On the news the fire dept said that many people have fire alarms but sometimes they go off when cooking that they pull out the batteries. I know my alarm goes off everytime I make toast in the morning.

I am glad you discovered the lamp and the pillow. That would have been horrible to think what could have happened. The things we take for granted. Yes, I am guilty of setting the smoke alarm off when I cook too...especially when I make grilled cheese .
Today Texas is burning up. We are having high winds in the 30-50 mph range, due to a passing cold front. We have been under a fire warning danger. In the bottom part of our county, 14 homes have been burnt to the ground by fast moving fires, despite the fire departments efforts in stopping the fire. We are not in the path of this fire, but have friends who are. The only thing I can do is keep praying that they are safe and to help them if necessary. I have our police scanner on tracking the movements of the fire dept. and the sheriff's office.

rdy, May be casino fire week. Saw brief TV pictures today of a roof top fire at The Foxwood Indian casino in Ledyard, Conn. Was thinking of taking the ferry from Orient Point for a day of donations to the Indian nation. Think I'll wait a while.

rdy, May be casino fire week. Saw brief TV pictures today of a roof top fire at The Foxwood Indian casino in Ledyard, Conn. Was thinking of taking the ferry from Orient Point for a day of donations to the Indian nation. Think I'll wait a while. Associated Press January 30, 2008 MASHANTUCKET — - A seven-alarm fire on a hotel roof forced hundreds of gamblers and guests out of Foxwoods Resort Casino on Tuesday. It was the second rooftop fire at an American hotel-casino since Friday, when a blaze damaged the top floors of the Monte Carlo on the Las Vegas Strip and sent 17 people to hospitals with minor injuries. There were no injuries reported from Tuesday's fire at the Great Cedar Hotel, one of three hotels at Foxwoods, said Arthur Henick, a spokesman for the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe, which runs the casino. By early evening, the smoldering fire was extinguished and crews began peeling back the steel roof where authorities believe the fire started, casino spokesman Saverio Mancini said. The roof would remain open overnight to let the area cool off, and fire officials planned to use an infrared camera that would pinpoint any hot spots remaining, Mancini said. Henick said Foxwoods officials were not speculating about whether the fire was an accident or arson, but they believed it started on the roof of the eight-story building. He said he was not aware of any construction work that was being done on the roof. Officials first evacuated the top three floors of the hotel, then later evacuated the entire 312-room building. As a precaution, officials also evacuated the Great Cedar Casino, located on the ground floor of the hotel and one of Foxwoods' six casinos. The hotel and its casino would be closed overnight, casino officials said. The more than 280 guests that had rooms booked there were given complimentary rooms at Foxwoods' other hotels as well as a hotel in nearby North Stonington. Henick said most of the damage to the top floors is expected to be from all the water used to put out the fire. He said the fire was confined to the roof area. "We've had some smoky things before," Henick said about previous incidents at Foxwoods. "Certainly in the 10 years I've been here, it's the biggest we've ever had." More than 50 firefighters from the tribe's fire department and nearby towns responded. The tribal and state fire marshals' offices also are investigating. freetobe, You're taking the ferry from Orion Point. Gosh, I would get my car drenched in salt water from a ride on that one. I preferred the ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jefferson ? I believe was the town. Easier and closer and bigger. Also took the ferry from New London to Block Island. Nice trips on a weekend.

John, When travelling to Conn casinos, I leave my car at orient and take the Sea Jet, a passenger only high speed ferry. There is a casino package deal for about $30.00 that includes rt on the Sea-Jet rt bus from New London to casino meal at the buffet or $10.00 food credit five free Keno bets. You can't beat it. Leave my home at 9AM and I'm back by 9PM. It's a nice day out.

They, too have some package deals if you stay at one of their hotels for the night. Because the casino is so close to home, we usually don't stay over night. We stayed once over night, and went back to the casino the next day-but the thrill/excitement of gambling took it's toll the previous day. It's a nice get-away-but its something that we cannot do alot. That casino we go to is also run by an Indian group. They have a good thing going. Could you imagine the amount of revenue that is generated? Texas will not allow casinos, altho they do have lotteries-which is mere chicken feed...buck buck buck buck(sounds of a chicken) ;D

Mass is looking into it also. The Mohegan Sun Puts hundreds of millions of dollars into Conn's coffer every year. It's mind boggling and many states are looking into this. By the way, yesterday I was listening to a station from Gonzales, TX playing a lot of Polish and Polka music. It was on internet radio. ;D ;D
