Poland is a Sanctuary of God where the Spirit dwells. Set like a South-African protea in the crust of the Earth, with its golden spikes tilted outwards and upwards, in a perfect circle of quasars, this noble Slavic nation, more than any other perhaps, sends out to the rest of humanity visions of better spirit of the Kingdom to come, the Spirit of Love and Truth. The quasars are the Saints and Martyrs, living and dead. The Truth is primarily about the Justice and the Mercy of God, but it is also about our love of God and men, which is holiness. We see the examples of both in the message of Sr. Faustyna Kowalska, and in that of St. Maximilian Kolbe. This truth, albeit invisible, sparkles with a supernatural light surpassing the brilliance of the finest diamonds. Human beings have been programmed by their Maker to gravitate toward this light, like sunflowers. When in great angst, when lost at the history's crossroads, individul, group, nation, invariably returns to this primordial sense of God. We the people of Polish ancestry have learned these truths from the face of the Black Madonna, and from the eyes of Christ on the roadside crosses. In fact, it is a sense of God not distinct from what Jesus teaches in the Beatitudes, a sense of love that stems from our status of the sons of God, and a sense of mercy that takes on its meaning directly from the Cross. It means desiring justice for the marginated, oppressed and poor, offering one's life if needs be for their cause. And it presupposes an attitude of sanctity toward God and man which transcends the condition of this world. As we stand at the threshold of the Third Millennium, we should keep in mind how important is the spiritual contribution of Poland to the world. Momentous changes, dangers and turmoils, will lurk on the horizon. Slavery in all its forms, abortion, pornography, mediocrity, will continue to be presented as "the inavoidable price of freedom." Violence and genocide will continue to be offered as "the rightful means to resolve disputes." But as long as Poland has not perished, and as long as Christianity remains, there will be hope and light! For we, the people of Polish descent, shall remain "the salt of the earth," the last defense of truth in a darkness-eclipsed universe ... the last stones for God to throw upon the barricade ... before we see the Truth Itself, face to face!
