This seems to be a good action of the Polish Goverment in maintaining troop levels in Iraq. For one thing, it provides stability to the area, and protection for the people.
For one thing, in the next generation, those people will have good memories of you guys as they go about the business of living.

The present contingent of 1400 soldiers will be reduced to 900 in February 2006. They are going to stay in Iraq till the end of the next year. Their main task will be to train Iraqi police and army, not secure the peace and fight with terrorists, what has been the job of Americans.

well understood and as should be. This has been the focus of German troops in Kosovo, the very same thing. Simply keep the peace.

Charles I was unaware, but learned in the Naród Polski newspaper, that Poland and Iraq actually had a bit of history, and that there was at one time a fair number of Iraqis living and working in Poland. According to this article, this paid off for the Americans in the first Gulf war when a small group of USA diplomatic workers ( aka intelligence agents) got trapped in Baghdad. According to the story, the Polish "intelligence workers" made fake Polish ID's and identities for these Americans and tried to move them out of the country as Polish citizens. Problem was, none of the Americans could even pronounce the Polish names they had! When getting to the border, the Polish Intelligence officer had an idea. He had the Americans take a few swigs of booze, and spill some on their clothes till the smelled like drunks. Then, approaching the border guards, explained that they were drunk and needed help walking. The ruse worked (of course, the border guard was slipped a little “something” as well. Turns out, the border guard spoke polish because his parents I think had lived there at one time and they spoke perfect polish! I still have that paper I think, I’m just not sure how to go about getting it legally copied here. I think people would find it fascinating. |

I was thinking, if perhaps you placed the source of the artical with the presentation, would not that be legal? Perhaps Jaga or Nancy cauld clarifie the legality of such a move.
The story is interesting and details the length intelligence officers will go for survival.

Well, it may be moot. The paper I thought was it was actually one from the Anniversary of Solidarity. I'll have to dig through some other stacks of papers to look and see if I still have it. I hope I do.  |

Piwo, this is such an interesting post. Yes, you are right that Poles have a long history to work as contractors in Iraq as for the booze - it sometimes helps really! was this article in Polish? maybe you could scan it and send me a scanned copy  |

I have to PRAY that I still have this edition. I kept it for a long time, and thought I knew where it was. It was actually a different one then I thought. BUT, I still may have it. In Naród Polski, the stories are usually written both in English, and in Polish. It's as if the paper is written twice in the same edition.
If I can find it, I will scan it right away and send it. I believe it was an edition before Easter, 2004.

OK.. I found it. :)It was in two separate editions, and I had cut them out and saved them (w język Angielski). When scanning into editable text, then cutting and pasting into a WORD document, a bunch of words are scrambled, so what I will do is go through the article line by line, and type in the scrambled words. I"ll also send you, Jaga, the scans of them as a jpg, since it's kind of unreadable as a pdf editable text. I'll have them tomorrow before noon (central USA, 7:00 PM Polish time). I'm leaving in a few minutes for dinner! |
