Nancy
Also I had the same problem, thought perhaps it was me! Happy/unhappy that it was the bbc fault.
Now, we will never know the fate of the farmer...

BTW it is a great occasion to educate about searching An elderly farmer who disappeared from his home in central Poland was found wandering around London's Heathrow Airport http.//news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4539688.stmIt is all about asking right questions: 1. Is there possibly another web site that could have that story. A. Quite probably there is. Even if not we could try to find out. 2. What key words would have to absolutely be in that story? A. Heathrow, Poland, farmer 3. Formulate your search query then based on key words using "AND" A. Heatrow AND Poland AND farmer It should bring pages with those words on them. 4. You know BBC is not opening for you now so you may exclude it from search using minus (- ) Heatrow AND Poland AND farmer AND -BBC 5. The other way to search would be to use the quote from the topic and put it into quotation marks and search for that quote. It should bring the pages with that quotation on the page. "who knows if I won't return," he said." You may want to exclude BBC again: "who knows if I won't return," he said." AND -BBC I am learning myself from notes on forums so here I take an advantage of BBC failure to spread the virus of searching. I hope you don't mind. BTW I didn't check those queries! They can be checked through Goggle News.

forza,
I know a lot about searching on the web so I do not need a lesson. I think if you (anybody "you") posts a link to the forum, there is some responsibility to see if it works, or if not, to find another way to tell your story.
the message will be lost if readers have to do too much work (any work!) to find it.
yours most sincerely, Nancy

OK, I am cheating. I copied this from one of the alternative links that forza gave.
WARSAW (Reuters) - An 84-year-old Polish farmer who had never been further than the next-door village snuck off to London to follow his dreams, but his plans of a new life there didn't last long.
Without a word to his family, Ludwik Zon donned his Sunday best and rode off on his bike to catch the bus and train to Warsaw, then flew off to London.
Worried officials who found him wandering around Heathrow got the Polish consulate to take care of him. It arranged his passage home, to his chagrin.
"It's too bad I wasn't allowed to stay longer, because the people there have got a wonderful life. I thought I might look about for a job. Here in Poland a person hasn't got a future," the disgruntled pensioner told Saturday's daily Super Express.
Fed up with life at home in the small central town of Znin, he skimped on food for years to save some $3000 from his meagre 600-zloty (104 pound) monthly pension to execute his plan, he said.
His baffled family reported him missing.
"Granddad had never travelled farther than the neighbouring village," said granddaughter, Malgorzata Kocinska.
Zon knew no one in Britain and cannot speak a word of English, but it did not dent his enthusiasm for London.
"In my long lifetime no-one had ever been as polite to me as the English, and who knows if I won't return," he said.
Thousands of younger Poles have had the same idea as Zon, moving to Britain for a new life and a better-paid job.

BBC was probably not accessible from where you live. Whenever I checked the link it was working fine. I didn't fail in responsibilities since I had posted alternative link before the lesson. The lesson was not meant for you Nancy nor anybody in particular. P. S. I do check my links.

Forza
speaking only for my self, on a rare occasion, I have suffered the similar result of a good url turned sour. Two things may happen.
One, the url was disbanded shortly after you had copied it.
The next one is; the url is a non-transferable link. This particular one is a constant concern of mine when poking my long nose into areas of information that is not meant to be shared.
This is only meant as an addition to your fine presentation. My meaning of this addition is just for information to perhaps others that have suffered the similar situation.

Thanks for the addition of the missing farmer, that filled in the missing gaps for curios and nosy people such as my self.
Please do not take offense at my post return to Forza... I with certainty, do not want to irk the both of you. My only intent, was to try to be helpful.
As a parting note,,boy, that old guy with certainty, had the courage, and fortitude to maintain his focus over overwhelming odds, to follow his dream. Good for him!!
It would be nice now,if the British Government allows him to maintain his dream now that he is on their turf...

I just found my way back to this thread. Guess what! The bbc link that forza gave (the first time) works now). I think Charles was right - sometimes the link works fine for the original poster when s/he checks it, then the source (bbc in this case) has a problem and the link does not work. (for example, did you see Kai's link to fireworks in Jaga's birthday thread?) sorry if I was grumpy....

Perhaps you were grumpy Nancy but don't be sorry please. We don't have to agree on everything and grumpy is fine, too. Actually I think you had your reasons: the story had a good beginning, the link didn't work and what followed was useless to you lecture on how to get anything from the web. Who would care? You only wanted to know what happened to the guy from Znin wondering around Heatrow. It makes perfect sense to me. The links sometimes don't work - true. I don't know but probably some web addresses accept web traffic selectively.
