Jaga, It appears that the glass ceiling is still very real in Poland. These figures are for 2007 correct? Was there any information as to larger trends. Are women's salaries catching up to men's salaries or has the difference remained at the same historic level?

Here are some articles about women and unemployment: Unemployment among Women - the Price of Motherhood culture.polishsite.us/articles/art160fr.htmfrom: culture.polishsite.us/smeconomy.htmlwomen usually were not very aggresive to get their salary higher in their professions as men were. But recently the Polish nurses were much better organized and they were able to fight some better work conditions. I guess women are second cathegory citizens almost everywhere, except Scandinavia.

How was it in Poland under the communists, Jaga? Here in the west they publicized that women were paid as much as men, and even that the majority of doctors were women rather than men. Doctors did not earn 5 or 10 times as much as a normal working person, but then ... I started to wonder if doctors were paid less in part because they were women...

Kai,
teoretically the salaries were only according to the function but my mother stated that the men who were at the same function she was, but in different towns in the same institution (publishing office) were earning more than she, because they were men.
referring to the doctors and teachers, men were usually in higher positions than women therefore they earned more. Referring to women-doctors, during late communism it was more girls than boys trying to study medicine. They also got better grades therefore the medical universities artificially extablished a higher points limit for girls than boys to be accepted to the medical school!
Men with low education but technical skills, like refrigerator or TV repairman were paid quite a lot of money.
One good thing during communism - cheap nurseries, kindergardens and organized vacations for kids.
