Children’s Ombudsman Ewa Sowinska [surly, ‘umbudswoman’?] has told the Wprost current affairs weekly she thinks Tinky’s ‘handbag’ (purse) could be a sign of latent ‘homosexuality’.
Tinky Winky is one of the Teletubbies characters, a children's programme that was a massive hit in Britain a few years ago, and which has been imported by the TVP public broadcaster to Poland.
Apparently, Ms Sowinska has been watching the programme carefully and has detected something disturbing. She told Wprost this week:
“I’ve noticed that Tinky Winky carries a woman’s handbag, but I didn’t think he was a boy, at first. [But when she discovered that Tinky was indeed a boy] …later I found out that there may be some kind of hidden homosexual subtext…”
A hidden homo-subtext? A Teletubby in the closet?
Of course, many can mock poor old Ewa Sowkinska for obviously being a graduate of the Giertych School of Media Studies, but a little digging into the subject appears to confirm that Tinky, and his Winky, may indeed have a dark secret.
For instance, a quick Wiki of Tinky brings the following result:
‘Tinky-Winky is the largest of the Teletubbies, has a triangular antenna on his head, and is notable for the red luggage (described by the show as a "magic bag", but often described by other media as a handbag) he carries. Due to this handbag, he is unofficially described as a gay icon.’
Oh, my Gaaaaaawwwd!
But that’s not all. Teletubbies not only includes ‘gay icons’ but gender benders, too. In the Wiki entry on the ‘Po’ character it says:
“Although many are unsure of Po's gender, or consider her to be male (possibly because of her scarlet colour and tomboyish antics), she is clearly referred to as female in several episodes,”
Jeeeeezus! Po is obviously a cross dressing lesbian! A Tubby-dike!!!
The Teletubbies is a devious plan by all those liberals in the BBC to INDOCTRINATE POLISH KIDS with homosexual propaganda.
But Sowinska should look further than the Teletubbies for strange sexually inspired behaviour in children’s programmes.
I mean – just look at Superman and his predilection for wearing his underpants outside his trousers? And what about Batman’s fondness for spending long hours – sometimes over night! – alone with Robin (the Boy Wonder) in the Batcave?
Surly Gotham City must have laws against that sort of thing?
Looks like Education Secretary Roman Giertych was right all along, but was not going far enough – ban gays from school, and the Teletubbies from the TV screens of Poland! Now! Before they get our kids

I read this story too. Quite absurd behaviour and the way Poland and its homophobic government is going they will be the laughing stock of Europe pretty quickly. If they aren't already.
George Michael, well known shirt-lifter and public toilet aficionado is giving a concert here soon. With a bit of luck he'll either cancel it or at the very least make an impassioned speech during it, much the same as that big girls blouse Sir Elton did last year.
I agree that homosexuality is not something to be glorified above what I call 'normal' behaviour but it is equally not something to be banned, outlawed or otherwise discriminated against. If for no other reason than because history proves it is utterly pointless!

Ewa Sowinska must be an embittered lady with no sense of fun or humour and must not understand the humour and enjoyment of young children. How anyone can read political/sensual meanings into the lively activities of the Teletubbies should have an (painful) injection of regeneration to be being a child again! If you are of that mind you can read anything into any programme or book - enjoy the Teletubbies as they were the most entertaining invention for children's' programmes when they were introduced. Incidentally they were introduced to counter the growing malicious habits of young people who were changing their TV wants from delightful children programmes to sex, lust, murder and mayhem programmes.
Sowinska - leave our Teletubbies alone. Members of this forum know I am not a young man anymore, but decorating the interior of my car is the set of Teletubbies and I wouldn't be without them (and I'm not gay1). Leslie

Someone needs to tell this lady that some American TV evangelist nutjob (Jerry Falwell perhaps??) already tried to pillory Tinky Winky and the other Teletubbies several years ago here with complaints of "latent homosexual symbolism" or something insane like that.
This whole thing was so ludicrous that not even this whacko evangelist's whacko followers really paid much attention to it.
Poor Tinky Winky. It ain't easy being purple....

Tinky Wikny - being a gay, was a big story in the US in the past just like Suzanne said. I do not understand why somebody in Poland took in seriously. I saw some news about it and the speaker of public rights in Poland was quite amuzed by this. But now Poland is again in the world news because of it. www.nzherald.co.nz/section/2/story.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=10442416WARSAW - Poland's conservative government took its drive to curb what it sees as homosexual propaganda to the small screen today, taking aim at Tinky Winky and the other Teletubbies. Ewa Sowinska, government-appointed children rights watchdog, told a local magazine published today she was concerned the popular BBC children's show promoted homosexuality. She said she would ask psychologists to advise if this was the case. In comments reminiscent of criticism by the late US evangelist Jerry Falwell, she was quoted as saying: "I noticed (Tinky Winky) has a lady's purse, but I didn't realise he's a boy." ++++++++++++

""She said she would ask psychologists to advise""
It would be a good idea that if at the same time she asked for a discussion with the psychologist she is recommending she also particularly invited a psychiatrist for herself. The Teletubbies gay!!! it's just a childrens funny and happy programme that she is out to spoil "

Calling Tinky gay is just a clever tactic promoted by the Teletubby lobby groups based in Washington, to divert attention from the fact...
...that the show is friggin' retarded!

Ludi,
I guess I have been lucky enough to only see the Teletubbies in teh Czech Republic with a very young cousin, so I wasn't subjected to the worst of their influence or boredom. The 'thing' on TV that gets to me is that retarded purple dinosaur 'Barney' - about as lovable as a Cabbage Patch doll - it should be buried in the garden, no?
Some of us are old enough to remember Howdy Doody and that knock-out Indian Maid on the show! Now THAT was a good influence!

Yes, Barney, the dreaded purple dinosaur!
I often get the impression that adults have a very low opinion of children, making these types of shows...
