Tomorrow is a 30 years anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. I remember this day very well not because I was a fan of Elvis. Frankly, I did not know that much about him since he was not really in fashion during this time in Poland and my brothers grew up rather on the music by Beatles, Yes and Electric Like Orchestra. Still I was a teenager, barely finishing my first year of highschool. We were in that time when his death was announced in Bratislava, today capital of Slovakia. We were welcomed there by my father's friend and professor of history from Slovakia.
Since Vienna is so close to Bratislava (50 km, 30 miles away), we were not watching at all Slovak TV, only the Austrian one since my both parents knew German pretty well. It was Austrian TV which announced Presley death, at least this is how we learnt about it.
I remember this time with some melancholy since my parents were still relatively young and full of life. None of us realized that the end of communism was so close. The life was pretty stable and everything seem to be the same way as always.
Our Slovak friends were for the separation of Slovakia and Czech Republic, but we did not believe this would ever happen. All of us were against communism of course. But our friends were even afraid to go to the church on Sunday. So, we knew that the restrictions were much worse in Czechoslovakia than in Poland in that time.
They had a car, white Skoda, and they drove us to places in their car. It was a very comfortable and nice vacations! It is hard to believe that this was already 30 years ago!
My brothers were students in that time, not married yet, They were not with us in Slovakia though.
