May I offer to all of the Polish people, a happy conclusion of elections result. For today is the beginning of tomorrow and may all that we wish for become true.
22.10.2007
Federal Minister Steinmeier on the elections in Poland Federal Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier sent the following letter today (22 October) congratulating Donald Tusk, leader of the Civic Platform, on his victory in Poland's parliamentary elections:
"Dear Mr Tusk,
Please accept my warmest congratulations on the election victory of the Civic Platform under your strong and committed leadership. Above all, this resounding success shows that the Polish electorate has given you a clear mandate to form a new government and thus to change course.
I am confident that together we can further develop the long-standing good and amicable relations between our two countries in a forward-looking manner and that we can reach agreement on any outstanding questions to the benefit of our two countries. I am convinced that we will also consult closely and work together constructively on European issues.
For the upcoming weeks, I wish you every success in forming a new government and a sure hand in all your decisions. I hope we will have an opportunity soon to exchange ideas in person."

Polish German official relations need some improvement. They were artificially worsened recently.
Polish German face to face interpersonal relations don`t need any improvement, I suppose. They are normal.

Yes, it is a good start for Tusk. It is really high time to stop the animosities. I think Russians would like to improve the relations too, but they are proud people and will never conciliate first. They need some encouragement.

On the other hand stubborness is a nasty European habbit, because we Europeans like to maintain our views of our neighbours, it gives us some certainty! Smart Dutch people see the simularities between the Dutch and their Eastern neighbours and see the little differances they can benefit from and exchange ideas and goods with this large brother, the Poles could do the same with their Eastern Slav Brother. It was a bad brother, bit stil family (shared *Slav roots, culture and wars). Pieter * Ofcourse the Poles are less Slavophile then the Russians!

Of course, everyone in Russia is very eager that Polish-Russian relations will improve in the very near future.

They are normal. It has been some difficult times, but these were soon to end. Now with the new leadership of Mr. Tusk, we may now continue to build. And yes, there never were a problem between people. Is not these mainly the situation with goverments? Charles

Pieter It would so seem of Mr. Tusk. He has his work placed before him as very much messed up. It will be to him, to place his mark as other leaderships have so far. The jury at present is out untill Mr. Tusk begins the work of rebuilidng bridges. Charles

Relatively speaking, Russians are good business people, they are smart and creative. If they have the goods/services, they will produce. It generally is a matter of coming together with terms that will be of equal benefit to both or various concerned parties. This was a major problem with the past leadership of Kaczynski {Jaroslaw} he appeared not of understanding the art of negotiation and compromise. I would not offer of course that the man was stupid, for he was not. But, perhaps simply not trained in this phase of leadership. I believe he conducted business to that of his ability allowance, but was unable to progress beyond. {Just after the fact in guess work} Charles

Charles I expect that Tusk, the leader of the conservative liberal party, will show pragmatism and try to improve relations, even if Kaczyńskis claimed that Poland is losing face. Kaczynskis` stand was like insurgents` in the Polish Rising - unyielding, to the end, when all around are dead, we will fight on. I don`t like it. I am a man of compromise and I prefer it to silly romantic last stands.

His personal phobias influenced his politics to a great extent. He considers himself a great Polish patriot and in politics he showed it by resistance to Russians and Germans. The result is deplorable - Poland didn` t block the Baltic Pipe Line. What is even worse, Poland didn`t join it either. Will Tusk be able to clean up after messy Ducks? I hope so.
