First of all my condolences to the Bhutto family. Benazir Bhutto's death is a great tragedy that needed not to happen. It happened because President Musharraf did not provide adequate security. Even a lay person as myself would have provided a better security for a single woman with the 10 billion that the U.S. gave Mr. Musharraf for "security"! With the 10 billion, he - a decorated strategist and general - could have surrounded Mrs. Bhutto with a handpicked army of policemen in civilian clothes, in a circle on every side of her vehicle! No person with a gun or bomb could have possibly penetrated such cordon! Speaking of elections, I see that Mr. Bush is commiting yet another mistake, forcing the election down the throat of a non-ready people! The People's Party needs to take a deep breath and choose a new leader! This will take four weeks at least, so the elections must be postponed by four weeks. Asking for "free" elections amid nationwide riots is absolute irresponsibility, wishful thinking, and insanity, all in one! My feeling is that, instead of January 8, the elections should be held on February 8. This will give time to the son of Mrs. Bhutto to mount a presidential campain (I can hardly see a better choice). Just announcing that the young Bhutto will run, at this time, will probably be enough to calm down the riots! He himself should get on the national TV and calm down the people ... if he wants to be a leader! I just hope that President Bush listens to "unaffiliated" people like me, who like to think!
