My Father and Mother both iummigrated this country.. I was born here.. So what am I, 1st or 2nd generation.

My Father and Mother both iummigrated this country.. I was born here.. So what am I, 1st or 2nd generation. Franek, I could be wrong (Often I am), but my grandparents immigrated here. I consider myself a 3rd generation "US Citizen" since they were the first citizens of the family and very proud of that. I have my granddads naturalization papers, still framed as he had it. Mary

Hi Mary and Franek, If your parents were born here then you would be second generation American. My grandparents immigrated here and both my parents were born here. They were then taken back to Poland and returned just prior to the war. This makes me 2nd generation also. It's where you were born that begins the process.

Thanks JJ, That makes perfect sense.....but considering in my case that granddad was so proud to be the first citizen in the family (he was 5 when he arrived here) I will leave my forum name as "generation3" in his honor. Like I said.......I am often wrong Mary
