In 1033 pn the height of the great depression. Money was tight. We all helped in any way that we could. My Busia packed all of her belongings in a sheet. She tied up the ends. This was her suitcase.Along with me ( I was her little Nunczka) we walked to a predertimend corner ,wher with other poles we boarded by a Farmer's truck.. Upon arrival at the farm we were issued a old wooden shack. All it had in it was a wood bed. Busia sew two sheets together. We then stuffed them with straw.. This was our matress..
Out side in the center was a arge stove covered with a sheet of steel, fired by logs that was never allowed to go out.. On this we did all of our cooking..At five in the morning we kids got up to make breakfast.. Fresh rolls, scrambled eggs, bacon, oat meat and fried potatoes. No body went into the fieldsh hungry. I made the coffee. We had a two gallon porcalin pot intop which I poured in grounds. We used canned milk.. The coffee tasted like strychnine but it awoke every one..
As thje old folks headedf into the fields.the girls baked bread, babka and once a week we had punczki or chrusciki. My job was to m,ake the soup. I made five gallon.
After our chores, the girls were left behind to wash clothes..We boys were expected to go out and steal watermelon and canteloup4e from other farms.. Tjhis wer did and later went swimming in a spring fed water hole.. Naked of course.. We invited thje girls. They wanted to co,me,but the old folks put a stop to that.
When the old folks came hjome in the evening supper was ready.
Pork.fried tomatoes and egg plant. mashed potatoes fresh bread and babka..And my soup.. It was good.. They taught me how to make it.We ate with the flies.Sticky paper was tied above to catch the flies.
On Sundays our families came to see us..They brought a lot of goodies.Jewish Corned beefg,Pastrami.Jewish rye bread and herring along with other goodies.y one uncle brought his accordian .We danced to Polka music all evening..They also told stories about poland..I listened in facination.
By early September we went home..I went back to school.
