French president Nicolas Sarkozy and his reported new wife Carla Bruni are planning a 'Romeo and Juliet' style honeymoon following their secret wedding.
The influential L'Est Républicain newspaper, which has close links with Mr Sarkozy's former wife Cecilia, said the ceremony took place at the Elysée Palace in Paris last Thursday.
The couple are set to honeymoon near the northern Italian city of Verona, the romantic setting for William Shakespeare's tragedy.
Miss Bruni - who is said to be obsessed with the tragic tale of two lovers - has booked a suite at an "intimate country hotel" in San Vito di Negrar, in the wine valley of Valpolicella.
It was reported the French president married supermodel and singer Bruni in an intimate secret ceremony
In Verona, hotel owner Marisa Merighi said: "I'm sorry but I really cannot make any comment. I have to respect our guests privacy."
Thursday's service was a civil ceremony attended by a few friends, according to the paper, which quoted a source whom it said was there.
Photographers had been tipped off by a palace official that the wedding would take place last Thursday - but at a different venue.
The source said: "It was a low-key ceremony. The president and his new wife looked extremely happy."
Mr Sarkozy's spokesman would not confirm or deny the marriage report, saying: "This information concerns the private life of Nicolas Sarkozy and I have nothing to say."
Mr Sarkozy, 52, met 40-year-old Miss Bruni less than two months ago at a dinner party organised by a mutual friend.
Last Tuesday he confirmed the relationship and hinted that a secret wedding was likely soon, saying: "There is a strong chance that you will learn about it after it's already done."
