Gang arrested for passing off grain alcohol as vodka
Created: 27.10.2008 13:08 Slask Police in southern Poland have captured a gang of alcohol manufacturers who, according to the police, produced extremely large factory-output quantities of grain alcohol and marketed it as vodka to legitimate stores.
Marek Wreczycki of the press bureau at the Slask Police stated that the group has produced and sold at least 43,500 litres of alcohol to unwitting clients. That means that they have robbed the National Treasury of approximately 2.2 million zloty (576,000 euro).
“Police are combating crimes against the economy, working together with courts and other functionaries. They successfully arrested nine people for the illegal production of grain alcohol and introducing it to the market,” Wreczycki claimed.
The bottles in which the alcohol was sold were sealed with falsified customs tags complete with holograms and official seals from vodka producers.
Four of the group detained were formally arrested. The remaining five face sentencing. Each person faces up to twelve years in prison. (mmj)
