She is named after her maternal aunt Caroline Lee Radziwill and a maternal great-grandmother. "Bog nam radzi" (The Lord is Our Counsel) is the famous family motto of one of the most prominent Polish aristocratic families of Lithuanian extraction-the Radziwills. Looking back at its history, it is clear that, apart from Providence, it has been Radziwills' notion of kinship and family solidarity that guided them throughout the often turbulent Polish history. While other families prospered only for three, four generations, Radziwills have not only kept their magnaterial profile for over five hundred years, but have done so 'in style', acquiring and maintaining great wealth and influence until the beginning of World War II. This family has produced many outstanding politicians, military commanders, clergymen, cultural benefactors and entrepreneurs who left a significant mark on the Polish and Lithuanian history and culture.

you know I once read somewhere that the patriarch of the Kennedy's Joe the father was a bootlegger in the 20's. Also that he became the ambassador to England during WWII. He also turned a blind eye on Poland during that time. Have not tried to verify it on the net but maybe someone knows.

Jim I do remember of this with Mr. Joe Kennedy whilst ambassador to England. The I net is not very informative, although the following url is of some assistance. The following url is of American business interest situated in Germany in of this time table. This is rather lengthy of reading, but if to scroll down to {Why Worry About the Coming War} then count down of 14 lines, will provide the discussion of Joe Kennedy with his thoughts. www.historycooperative.org/journals/llt/51/pauwels.htmlFor of many American firmen were heavily invested in German industry at and around this period of time, many to continue during war time to war end. Then as of Ford, were of first of recompense to war time use of slave labour. One of American firm of {Omni Budd} manufactured kubel Wagen bodies in finish, these then transported by rail to KdF assembly factory for to be placed upon one side of the assembly equipment for end meet with completed VW pan assemblies. Once this process was mated and bolted together, the completed ready to operate Kübelwagen then rolled off the assembly line for shipment to military customer .
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_K%C3%BCbelwagen
As a trade off for design co-operation to Herr Porsche and to the then Reich goverment. Mr. Henry Ford provided in-depth design work for rapid manufacture with use of assembly line process. This was inturn to the favour of Mr. Ford for his transportation manufacturing firm of heavy transport vehicles and automobiles of his name.
As a note: For manufacture of gear sets, British Ryder precision machines were later placed into use in the KdF factury.

I met a Radziwill lady in France in Porvance. She was from the Radziwill's who also had some properties in Krakow area. She was active in charities helping send goods to Poland during difficult 80-es when it was hard to find anything in the stores in Poland.

Jim,
I believe most of what you said is true and also, you should know that when he was ambassador to this country, he took an isolationist stance and recommended to your government that America should stay out of the war. I believe that the blind eye to Poland bit is especially true. I also believe that if his beliefs were followed a lot of American lives would have been saved and Germany would have won the war. However Germany's allegiance with Japan and Pearl Harbor made all the difference. I truly wish your help was not necessary but your financial backing and your additional manpower was critical. I mean no insult to Karl, if he reads this, but Hitler's Germany is not the same as Merkel's Germany and whatever your thoughts on her political stance, at least she is not tyrannical. I don't know how many American boys died in the war, but ultimately it wasn't in vain. We respect their memory, but we despise Joseph Kennedy as much as we love JFK - who had different views and fought for them. He did not share his dad's beliefs, which would have left us under the jackboot.

It was the d**n war. Opps, I almost forgot of inclusion of a remark to add to yours of JFK {John F. Kennedy} for this man of responsibility as the President of The United States. He gave his famous speech in Berlin year 1963, and his speech of {Ich bin ein Berliner}. www.historyplace.com/speeches/berliner.htmThis man was so popular with us, for he emitted such hope and promise of the future to us. I was then of years 23, young, enthusiastic, very loyal and believed I would never die. This man was the idealistic of all that we would all wished and believed of. At this time I was serving in our trawler fishing fleet shortly after graduation from our maritime school in Hamburg with my Merchant marine 2nd officers papers {Wheel house management/powersystems-hydraulics engineering}. I have never been very fond of Berlin, but at that time, very much wished to have been there. Karl

Well, that's certainly good information to know. As the (very possible) new senator for my state, I'll be sure to remind her of this connection while encouraging her to pass the bill adding Poland to US Visa Waiver program, ASAP!!!! thanks!!
