Jaga, This is truly beautiful, but when you have to leave your nice centrally heated home and go out in it .............. Brrrrrr Neville Ahh... I am up early today after coming back tired from a trip into our mountains this weekend. I went to play on the snow and help with a winter mountain travel course. Two weeks ago we had a spell of -20F and now we were suffering from a warm Chinook Wind from the south (In Germany called the Fone? when it comes from Africa?) Much of the snow we had was melted and in the mountains we were reduced to 1 to 1.2 meters of snow to play on. It made digging snow caves a bit more challenging. I dug a cave next to a fallen tree, trying to take advantage of the snow drifted by the tree. It worked ... mostly, though I had to build a big snow block wall on one end and the snow was melting and dripping on me as I dug it out. I took my new three season tent with me to assure a roomy and dry sleeping place, and it worked quite well out on the flats between trees. 'Three season' excludes winter, but at +40 it is not winter, even with all that snow. It was fun, the people were great as usual, it is great to share experience and learn new ideas from other's experiences, and every year I try a different style of snow cave just for fun. I prefer tents however, and only slept in the caves twice. It is good to know them for survival, however. Ahhh ... our winters are SO much more pleasant than those down south when you get those terrible snows and storms! Jaga, those pictures of Poland in winter are beautiful. Kai PS We also do not suffer from the bone-crunching cold that Europe and the Souther 48 states suffer from with your high humidity!

It is amazing how that building and tree give me Déjà Vu. I would swear I have been there!
I have not heard how the winter is in Slovakia this year.
