Subject: HellThe following is supposedly an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid-term. The answer by one student was so "profound" that the professor shared it with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well. *Bonus Question*: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic(absorbs heat)? Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following: First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today. Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities: 1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. 2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over. So which is it? If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, "it will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you, and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number 2 must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct... leaving only Heaven thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why last night, Teresa kept shouting "Oh my God." THIS STUDENT RECEIVED THE ONLY "A" ;D :

Excellent!IMO it's individualized whether the soul hates heat more than cold or vice versa. Carl

Haaa, a good topic to shave the head by...If seen with a proper prespective..
Strangly, I had some thing of this as a topic once some long time in past. My university classes where disinated for me, and it was up to me to attend those classes.
One class was in effective communications 102, well, the student was required to have first a 101 to enter. My question to the instructor was, what would it take to enter his class, he said to me, write me a paper, now!
His list of subject matter was: You guessed it. Man has the right to go to hell. Well what do you do, will, you do what you have to do. I wrote his paper that morning in the copy room, it took two hours to complete. Just divided it up into two areas of subject. One the first, was the bibical version of hell, then, the write up of mans self made hell. Then a sumerization of the both as a whole. Well, I have no idea what he would have graded it as. But, the following monday, I showed up for class and was named on roll call.
So, what exactly is hell?

Once I read (maybe Sartre) "Hell is other people" what do you think hell is?

Well Nancy, I am very faithfull to the Christian bible verson (King James). That we all must not fall short at the time of Judgement, if we are to enter into Gods house in Heaven.
Perhaps though, there lays many different doors to enter into the Kingdom of God's. We as mortals only know what our senses tell us, we can not emagine no end of time, endless forever rather it is the far reaches of space bejound earth that is forever with out end. Or to sleep in death untill awakening at time of judgement as if we had just shut our eyes. Or, to emagine to be without life for ever as in the damned.
There are many many things of the Word of God, I as a person, do not understand, but, I accept it as truth, because it is the word of God.
My shadow has not crossed the door way of God's House for many years. But, Gods house is in me. For it is there that I worship God and try to maintian his laws. But, I slip many many times, and then talk and ask for his forgiveness, so many many times.
For many years, I was in the habit of praying in the morning before leaving for work, because I was not very sure that I would live long enough before having another chance to pray, or return to my home.
I mean this not as a borbid post, or opportunity to spout, but to explain my side to you. I feel God's presence over my self, it gives me warmth and a feeling of security. I observe God's protection over me and my family, for in spite of my many weaknesses, I have never been in actual want. He only lets me fall down only so far, then he presents a solution, and up I go once more in life.
I want to share with you a poem with you. If it is a bit worn out, please do have patience then.
" I shall
Grow old,
but never lose
life's zest,
Because the road's
last turn
will be the best.
By: Henry van Dyhe (The poem is old and faded, I believe that is the correct spelling)
Ooops, I forgot to answre your question of, " what do I think is hell". Well, I believe it is the burning pit, where those that have not measured up to enter into the Kingdom of heaven, will be cast into. There they will burn untill the time is up, and then they will be nothing as if they had never existed.
AS a side note: Burning pits were common in the bible time in the middle east. It was a pit that burned fairly well on a 24hr/7 days basis. Dead animals, garbage, toss outs, were thrown into this pit and burned. Neccessary for hygenic reasons and to keep the insects and desease facters down.

IMO Hell is what you hate the most. Yes, but then the question is ...what do you hate the most? I think hell is some sort of spiritual punishment, not a literal burning pit or anything physically real.

John...excellent story. As of last Thursday...I believe I entered the doors of hell. (downsizing at work I was taken out of my position and thrust into another with out any choices. Well one choice to quit. Well maybe it is not hell as it is so cold in that area that my teeth chatter. It is needed to keep a certain temp as these are medical supplies) I have been there for 24 years and my chances probably of finding a new position maybe slim especially at my age. Time will tell. I dread each work day. The health field is not a healthy place to be in these days. (no pun intended.

RDY, Hang in there. At my age I know well the feeling of trying to cut you out because you earn too much moooneyyyy !!!!! This generally applies to employees who have been there to long and earn to much. Went on my own and surprised everyone. Had my own company for many years.
